Finally, a "good news" issue.

Sort of.

First, ADVERTISING AGE* announced its "A List," the ten outstanding magazines of the past year, at the recent American Magazine Conference.

With additional data by John Harrington's The Single Copy newsletter, the list reveals some interesting newsstand facts;

2008 newsstand rank: #244.
Sell-through 43%.

Here's another "good news" list:

The Fall 2008 MRI magazine audience research showed many magazines gaining readers - and in a broad spectrum of categories, including those that are supposed to be suffering.

Some examples from the mediapost.com article:

FORBES* enjoyed a 10% increase in its audience from full year 2007-2008...while COOKING LIGHT* saw its total audience increase 8%. AARP THE MAGAZINE* grew 8%. HEALTH* grew 9%; IN TOUCH WEEKLY* jumped 19%; MEN'S FITNESS* grew 16% while competitor MEN'S HEALTH* rose a more modest 5%; REAL SIMPLE* jumped 14%.

And for the rest of this newsletter, well...the lay-offs announced this week are smaller than those previously reported. We guess that's a "good" in these times.

Elsewhere in the industry:

Publisher Time Inc continued its announced layoffs this week, according to adage.com. PEOPLE*, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED*, FORTUNE* and TIME* started seeking volunteers for buyouts this week, with plans for involuntary layoffs if not enough people raise their hands. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY*and ESSENCE*, however, has moved directly to layoffs. EW is laying off 15 to 20 staffers, primarily from editorial. Essence is eliminating positions for three or four people on the editorial side and another four or five people from the business side. And, the Christmas party is off. Top editors and publishers at both magazines, however, are safe...

Publisher Doubledown Media (TRADER MONTHLY*, PRIVATE AIR, CIGAR REPORT) has announced layoffs of about a dozen staffers and three others were placed on furlough. 10 executives have been asked to take a temporary 50% pay cut, including President and Editorial Director Randall Lane. Even THE ECONOMIST* is laying off a dozen workers - somewhat modest compared to other top magazines. Some of the pink slips were due to an earlier reorganization and the majority came from The Economist Intelligence Unit, the group's business-to-business publishing arm...

Carlos Perez is the editor-in-chief/publisher of the magazine, which is available in Sonoma County, CA bike shops and nationally by subscription...

BACKPACKER* and YOGA JOURNAL* publisher Active Interest Media has laid off 23 employees, representing about 10% of its workforce. The cuts, according to a spokesperson, were made across "most divisions" and were "non-revenue producing" positions. Yet, CEO Efrem "Skip" Zimbalist wrote in an e-mail to foliomag.com: "...those who are leaving were real contributors to our success."...

C-ARTS is a new bimonthly that targets art enthusiasts. Magazines Canada, the Canadian equivalent of the US industry organization Magazine Publishers of America, has realized that tough economic times mean that you have to promote yourself more, not less. This is borne out by numerous marketing studies. They have hired advertising agency Zulu Alpha Kilo on a project basis to promote magazines to agencies and advertisers. "The Canadian magazine industry is doing very well serving its readers and advertisers," said Gary Garland, Magazines Canada executive director, advertising services. "But in this [economic] climate, we determined we needed a strong new promotional tactic to make that point."...

SNAPPED debuted in February as a quarterly showcasing photography of the African continent. The magazine, from Bell-Roberts Publishing, also features interviews with photographers, technology reviews, previews, and listings of events, books, and exhibitions. Details are posted at http://snapped.co.za/submissions...

The Audit Bureau of Circulations' November issue of its ABC NewsBulletin published that the organization has formed a digital advisory committee, which has held its first meeting. Maghound is a Netflix-like membership program, where members can switch between subscriptions...

Some highlights from consumer marketing and sales EVP Brian Wolfe in a memo about Time Inc's reorganization: "Each of our magazine and digital properties will be assigned to a brand leader, who will set strategic direction for our consumer activities and manage the P&L for their respective magazines. Their focus will include net paid and rate base planning, research, relationships with edit and ad sales, audience development, branding, and newsstand" and "All of our marketing efforts will be centralized in a team...[which] will manage the new business and retention activities for all of our magazines. There will be a new business and retention director and each business unit will have a new business and retention manager and associate to support their marketing activities." Finally: "We will have relentless focus on activities and levers that drive the business. We'll have to prioritize and make difficult decisions on how we spend our time and allocate our resources. We need to be diligent about setting goals and not be distracted by requests or activities that are not in direct support of these goals."...

Some additional interesting facts from the MRI Fall 2008 magazine audience study: Of the 250 or so titles included in the survey, just 19 reach an audience with a median household income of $100,000 or more, with United HEMISPHERES* ($127,571), VERANDA* ($119,736) and the ECONOMIST* ($118,146) topping the list. Said This Week:

According to mastheadonline.com, former editor of CHATELAINE*, Kim Pittaway, told a room full of editors gathered for a recent luncheon hosted by the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors:

"If pay rates for freelancers don't increase, the Canadian publishing industry will end up with a pool of writers who consider magazine writing a hobby." With 25-30 magazine pieces published or scheduled to be published this year - about 40,000 words in total - Pittaway's total net income will work out to about $55,000. "That's less than my executive assistant was making when I was working at Chatelaine."

Interesting magazines you should have a look at.

Much of this is 'hot off the press' news. So new, it might not even be available in the Magazines Database on the website yet. However, it will be there with our next update, which we do as often as needed. But never less often than once a week (usually on Fridays.)

~~~ MICHIGAN SPORTS & FITNESS* ~~~
It is published to help readers to get the most out of their active lifestyles.
The editorial covers nutrition, training, health and fitness, product reviews, pre- and post-race reporting; regular columns on running, cycling, triathlon, nutrition and fitness.
It is distributed at specialty grocers, sports medicine facilities, universities, local events, bicycle shops, running stores, private and corporate health and fitness facilities, sporting goods stores and specialty outfitters.
Writers should contact the editors for assignments; we have their reader demographics and 2009 editorial calendar.
Like to pitch this magazine? You could receive contact information and the editorial calendar right in this newsletter every week. It's easy - see the next section below.
We serve enthusiastic gardeners throughout North America, from novices to lifelong participants, whether they garden on their patio or 'the back 40.' We help gardeners to fulfill their desire for fresh food, a lively and beautiful yard, and a satisfying experience of working in harmony with nature."
The editorial provides advice, practical information and stories to inspire and empower gardeners of all skill levels to find success in their chemical-free gardens.
We have their writer's guidelines, reader demographics and 2009 editorial calendar.
~~~ TEATIME* ~~~

This is a magazine about tea and the tradition of drinking it.

It highlights tea, not only as a beverage, but as an influence on art, music, literature, history, design and global societies.

It "is designed to enhance the enjoyment of tea as a gourmet beverage as rich in tradition as it is in flavor. For those individuals who find tea as interesting and complex as fine wine, the magazine features in-depth product information and reviews, profiles on people who share a passion for tea and elegant tea rooms and spots worth visiting. The magazine also contains well-loved recipes and creative techniques that go behind making tea time a memorable occasion."
