November 28, 2001 - Total Movie & Entertainment (TME) is the new title of defunct Total Movie magazine which ceased publication last February. TME is now owned by Versatile Media One and has been restructured as a bimonthly magazine which relaunched with its October/November issue.

Sports Illustrated to publish 16 extra issues in February

November 26, 2001 - Sports Illustrated will be publishing 16 extra magazines in February for the 2002 Winter Olympics being held in Salt Lake City. Each issue will be 36 pages, covering all the sports action. Distribution of 75,000 copies in and around the Olympic venues is planned.

New editorial tone at Wired

November 26, 2001 - Wired, the Condé Nast monthly covering business, technology, science and culture, is looking to change its editorial style. "We're going to make the magazine more accessible, with our writing style and with the topics we cover," said Editor-in-Chief Chris Anderson, who joined Wired in June from The Economist. More specifically, "the front will be "longer, much more accessible visually and editorially," while cover stories will be more thematic (like the December special report on the future of war).

Ticker uses freelance writers, but not necessarily from the U.S.

November 14, 2001 - Ticker, a financial trade magazine, has dissolved its editorial department completely and replaced it with outsourced editorial contributions. U.S. freelance writers need to be cautious however, as it is possible that only less-expensive writers in Third World countries are hired and then articles rewritten by US editors, a move designed to save money according to a former senior editor. The title, published by 123Jump, also reportedly is not interested in timely payment to freelance writers. Writers beware.

Petite ceases publication

November 14, 2001 - After only one issue this past summer, Petite will cease publication. The owner was Petite Magazine Inc.

Technical computer details covered in new title

November 14, 2001 - Computer Power User is for techies who enjoy wireless gadgets, fast Internet connections and are up at 2 a.m. to reconfigure and play around with their systems. The monthly title is published by Sandhills Publishing and includes reviews, tips and commentary. Check the website for more information.

New fitness title to debut

November 14, 2001 - Fitness RX is a new bimonthly magazine debuting in early January for people interested in topics such as diet, nutrition, exercise, health, cosmetic enhancement and sexual fulfillment. The title is published by Advanced Research Press.

Despite news to the contrary, magazines do read their mail

Casino Player is adding a monthly department that focuses not only on key people but also top employees who keep customers entertained and satisfied. Editor-in-chief Adam Fine at parent company Casino Publishing Group leads the title.

LIFE magazine gets new life

November 7, 2001 - LIFE magazine has been relaunched, starting with two special issues on the September 11 attacks on America and cumulating into a minimum of eight issues next year, at six week intervals. Among the titles slated for 2002 are "Rock and Roll at 50: A History in Pictures," "American Speed: From Dirt Tracks to NASCAR" and "The Mafia: An American Saga." The overall management of the LIFE brand will continue under the direction of the TIME Magazine Group. Check LIFE's website for more information.

eWeek expands coverage as it folds in Interactive Week

November 7, 2001 - Interactive Week is merging with eWeek which will continue publishing under the eWeek name. The controlled circulation will increase from 400,000 to 445,000 and will include an Interactive Week section featuring coverage of Internet and infrastructure-related developments. "We are taking the best of two great publications and creating a newsweekly that not only reflects the current business environment, but helps companies make the right information technology decisions for future growth," said Eric Lundquist, editor-in-chief of eWeek, a Ziff Davis Media title.

New dental practice title launches

November 7, 2001 - Contemporary Oral Hygiene explores the impact that hygienists have on dental practices. The title, launched in August by Medical World Communications, Inc., will be published bimonthly in 2002, with three issues distributed this year. The circulation of the new publication is 65,000.

New fashion/celebrity/shopping title launches

November 7, 2001 - Every two months, 250,000 women between 18- and 35-years-old will receive a free copy of Damez, a newly launched title covering fashion, celebrities and shopping. Additional distribution is expected on college campuses and at retail stores that cater to the over 25-year-old crowd. The title's website is still under construction and further information was not available.

Title connects investors with technology companies

November 5, 2001 - Executive Summary: Southeast is a new magazine profiling southeastern technology and bioscience companies for a target audience of venture capitalists and investors. Full Story

MH-18 ceases publication

November 5, 2001 - After just five quarterly issues, Rodale has ceased publishing MH-18, the Men's Health sibling title.

Petite Magazine on publishing hold

November 5, 2001 - Petite Magazine may in trouble following a lackluster premier summer issue which only garnered 1,000 subscribers from the 20,000 copies distributed nationwide. Currently the winter issue is on hold as publisher Daniel Stanton waits for enough advertising and subscriptions to come in before going to press. The title, based in Spokane, Wash., plans to eventually shift from quarterly to monthly publication.


Teen People has a new West Coast bureau chief, Lori Berger, formerly a contributing editor at Elle Girl. Ms. Berger will manage entertainment coverage for that region. In addition, a new senior associate editor was named, Jen Smith, formerly an associate editor. (November 28)

Global Wireless will no longer appear in print other than as a supplement to sister publication RCR Wireless News. The bimonthly telecommunications title is moving to an electronic format as of January 1. The editorial staff remains unchanged. (November 28)

Forbes Global, the international edition of Forbes magazine, has a new editor, Tim W. Ferguson. (November 28)

Telephony, Global Telephony and Wireless Review, all Primedia Business Magazine & Media titles, have combined their editorial staffs. More specific information was not immediately available. (November 26)

San Francisco Chronicle's Sunday Magazine will only publish 26 issues (bi-weekly) in 2002, rather than the usual weekly. (November 26)

Vegetarian Times and Better Nutrition are moving their editorial base from Stamford, Conn. to just outside Richmond, Va. starting in the new year. A third title in testing, Healthy Lifestyles, is expected to be published three or four times in 2002 as an insert to both titles. New staff announcements are expected as most staffers did not opt to move. (November 19)

Plastics Auxiliaries & Machinery has been acquired by Canon Communications LLC from Tidewater Publication Services Inc. The staff of the monthly magazine has been let go and a new editor named, Merle Snyder. (November 19)

PC Magazine has named a new executive editor, Stephanie Chang, formerly the founding editor of Access magazine. (November 19)

Popular Science has named a new editor, Scott Mowbray. (November 19)

MBA Jungle has named a new editor-in-chief, Vince Bielski, formerly the title's executive editor. Mr. Bielski is replacing Bill Shapiro who is moving into custom publishing. (November 19)

Country, The Magazine of the Hamptons, has ceased publication. Staffers, other than editor Jacqueline de Montravel, who was released, have already been working on other M. Shanken Communications Inc. titles. (November 19)

American Prospect has named a new senior editor, Ana Marie Cox, formerly the senior editor at the Chronicle of Higher Education. In addition, a new managing editor was named, Lisa Hisel, formerly the managing editor of the Population Reference Bureau. (November 19)

Your Life, Your Garden, Homes & Ideas, Woman's Journal and Marie Claire Health & Beauty, all IPC Media titles, will cease publication. Practical Parenting's Complete Guide to Pregnancy will cease standalone publication and be folded back into its parent title, Practical Parenting. (November 14)

Automotive Engineering International - en Espanol is the new title of SAE's Spanish language bimonthly edition of Automotive Engineering International. (November 14)

Ms. will be looking for a new editor-in-chief, following the magazine's acquisition by the Feminist Majority Foundation. Marcia Gillespie had been editor-in-chief since 1993. (November 14)

Catholic Digest was acquired by Mystic, Conn.-based Bayard USA from the University of St. Thomas. (November 14)

BizBash Idea Center has named a new editor-in-chief, Chad Kaydo, formerly the executive editor. (November 14)

Modern Healthcare has named a new news editor, Barbara Kirchheimer, promoting her from reporter. (November 14)

Crafts magazine has named a new editor-in-chief, Valerie Pingree, formerly the marketing director of Creating Keepsakes. (November 14)

Biography magazine will raise its ratebase in January from 650,000 to 700,000. (November 14)

InStyle has appointed a new features editor, Angela Matusik, formerly InStyle's website editor. The website will now be edited by Lisa Gabor, former founder and editor-in-chief of Fuse magazine. (November 14)

Bust, an indie women's magazine, has suspended publication. Razorfish Studios owned the eight-year-old title. (November 14)

Ms. has been acquired by the Feminist Majority Foundation and will transfer editorial operations to Los Angeles. Gloria Steinem remains on as consulting editor. (November 14)

Mustang Illustrated, Drag Racing USA, and High Performance Mopar, all Primedia McMullen Argus Publishing titles will cease publication. Another publication, Kit Car Illustrated will be folded into Kit Car Magazine. (November 12)

ArtByte, an Owners Farming Publishing Company title, has suspended publication while it looks for a new partner and/or new investors. (November 12)

Agency ceased publication following its Fall 2001 issue. The title was the official magazine of the American Association of Advertising Agencies. (November 12)

Redbook has named a new deputy editor, Sharlene Breakey, formerly the editor-in-chief of Working Mother. (November 12)

Drag Racing USA, a McMullen Argus/Primedia title, has ceased publication. (November 7)

Modern Healthcare has named a new editor, David Burda, formerly the title's news editor. (November 7)

Vibe will increase its ratebase in January from 775,000 to 800,000. (November 7)

Honey will increase its ratebase in 2002 from 250,000 to 350,000 while Savoy will move from 200,000 to 300,000. Both titles are published by Vanguarde Media. (November 7)

Professional Tool & Equipment Distributor has been acquired by Cygnus Business Media from Marketing Advertising Communication Services Inc. (November 7)

Smart Partner, a Ziff Davis Media title, has ceased publication. (November 7)

Maxim en español is the Spanish edition of Maxim due to be distributed in the U.S., Mexico and South America. The title is published by Dennis Publishing in conjunction with Editorial Televisa. (November 7)

Lightwave Europe will premier in March as a monthly tech magazine for the European fiber optics industry. The title is led by newly appointed editor-in-chief Matthew Peach, formerly the executive editor of Global Design News. Circulation of 15,000 copies is anticipated in Europe, the Middle East and Africa by publisher Penn Well. (November 7)

Esquire will increase its ratebase by 7.7 percent in February from 650,000 to 700,000. (November 7)

Blender, a Dennis Publishing title, will increase its ratebase from 250,000 to 350,000 in 2002, a 40 percent increase. (November 7)

Beauty Biz has named a new editor-in-chief, Jenny B. Fine. Ms. Fine was also appointed as associate editor of Women's Wear Daily. (November 7)

SAVOY has named a new fashion director, Kevin Stewart. HONEY has also named a new fashion director, Michaela Angela Davis. Both titles are published by Vanguarde Media, Inc. (November 5)

Photo Trade News has named a new editorial director, Mike McEnaney, formerly the title's editor-in-chief. Mr. McEnaney is now responsible for the overall editorial direction of the publication. (November 5)

Harper's Bazaar has let three editorial staff members go, including features editor Catherine Hong and design editor Sarah Giles. The West Coast editorial office will close altogether, thus eliminating the position held by West Coast editor Deda Coben. (November 5)

CIO Poland recently launched for top executive in Poland's emerging IT market. The title is led by editor-in-chief Iwona Bartczak and is published by International Data Group (IDG), which has editions in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, China, India, Germany, and the United States as well.
