Windows & .NET Magazine has announces the launch of their free content syndication program, which is designed to share material from their magazine, website and newsletters with websites that are not large enough to produce their own stories. For further information, contact the publication at (970) 663-4700 (September 16) Content Watch 2002 Playboy, owned by Playboy Enterprises' Alto Lorna Entertainment, has sold non-exclusive rights to the entire 48-year archive of editorial material to Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. The articles are to be reviewed for possible movie ideas in an upcoming film about Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. In addition, the rights extend to work by contract employees that were commissioned but never placed in print. (May 15) Congressional Green Sheet will send its content to CQ.com On Congress, website of the Congressional Quarterly. (January 7) Content Watch 2001 Martha Stewart Martha is the name of the new Japanese edition of Martha Stewart Living. 60 to 70 percent of editorial content will be derived from the U.S. edition. (December 10) National Geographic will place content taken from its travel, photography, maps, geography, animal, nature, kids, news, education, space, science, adventure and exploration areas of its web site and place it within American Online's 'Research and Learn,' 'Travel,' 'News' and 'Kids Only' areas. (October 29) METRO Magazine has launched a website that offers access to the print title and full feature articles. (August 6) National Enquirer's web site will be providing editorial content for GossipFlash, a new e-mail newsletter and web site launched by partners eUniverse and National Enquirer. (July 23) NextStep Magazine, published five times per year and distributed at college fairs and high schools, will be providing content to CollegeRecruiting.com. (July 11) WWF Magazine and Raw Magazine, both published by World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc., will place editorial content on to virtual pages via CD-ROM through a new partnership formed with Uncommon Media Group. (July 9) Marriott Insights is a new monthly guest room magazine from Marriott International, Inc., to be distributed starting this fall at seven of the hotel chain's lodging brands. Editorial content from Time, Sports Illustrated, People, Fortune, Golf Digest, PC Magazine, Shape and Motor Trend will be used. The title's initial distribution is estimated at one million, with a total estimated readership of four million. (June 27) New York Magazine will be supplying content to a new website, www.newyorkmetro.com, beginning on August 20. The website is a joint venture between Primedia's New York Magazine and Rainbow Media Holdings Inc.'s MetroChannels. (June 11) Midwest Gaming & Travel magazine will run its content on About.com's casino gambling web site, http://www.casinogambling.about.com, starting this week. (June 6) The American Psychological Association will partner with Ovid Technologies to make more than 25,000 articles from leading psychology journals stored in the PsychARTICLES database available through Journals@Ovid. (May 30) Netbusiness Magazine, a new monthly online publication focusing on timely small business issues, will derive its editorial content from Fortune Small Business along with other unnamed Netbusiness partners. The title is owned by Netscape Communications. (May 23) Golf for Women will incorporate popular editorial features from Golf Digest Woman. The content merger resulted when Golf for Women was acquired by The Golf Digest Companies, an independent unit of Advance Magazine Publishers Inc., an Advance Publications Company, from Meredith Corporation. (May 21) Inside Education magazine will post its content on the title's complementary online publication, InsideEducation.net. (May 21) Ariba, the magazine for B2B eCommerce, now makes its content available on a companion website, www.aribamag.com. (May 2) The Public Library of Science is asking that the content of all science journals and magazines be archived on free universal databases, citing that the public has ultimately paid for the research through subscriptions. Boycotts have been called for in order to pressure titles to offer free distribution of material after six months from the original publication date. Writers need to understand and protect their electronic rights. (April 30) Transworld Skateboarding and Ride BMX, two titles published under Time4Media's Transworld Media division, will provide content for Transworldmatrix.com, a part of CNNSI focused on extreme sports. (April 30) Harper's Bazaar content will appear on its companion website, expected to launch in the next week. (April 23) Consulting firm A.T. Kearney polled 30 organizations in the network-publishing industry and concluded that workforce inefficiencies related to digital publishing will cost companies $750 billion this year. One new possible model to generate much needed revenue is to allow consumers to become the distributor, receiving credits to pass content on to colleagues. Writers need to read their contracts very closely, especially in regard to electronic rights. (April 18) Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine, Departures, T&L Golf, Travel + Leisure Family and SkyGuide will soon be contributing travel and epicurean content to co-branded sites across AOL. (April 11) Modern Bride and Good Housekeeping will soon be translated into Chinese. International Data Group (IDG) is entering into a joint venture with Primedia to debut Modern Bride in China starting in May, and partnering with Hearst to produce a Chinese version of Good Housekeeping. In both cases, half of the editorial content will come from the U.S. versions, while the other half will be new material produced by a Chinese editorial staff. (March 26) The National Enquirer, Star Magazine, The Globe, Country Weekly, Country Music Magazine and Auto World Weekly, titles published by American Media Inc., will be tapped to provide content to eUniverse, an interactive entertainment network. (March 21) SmartMoney.com will supply daily editorial content to Yahoo!. (March 14) Buyside Magazine, an investment title, will be available in full for free on Buyside.com starting today. (March 12) Following Walt Disney Company's 50 percent acquisition of Wenner Media's US Weekly, content from US Weekly is expected to be used in such venues as "The View," entertainment segments on ABC-owned television stations and radio networks, as well as on SoapNet. The Walt Disney Internet Group is exploring ways to utilize content from the title in its various entertainment Web sites. (February 28) Popular Science will be sharing vision technology stories with Science & Technology News Network. (February 26) Teen Newsweek has started providing content for MSNBC.com on its Newsweek.MSCNC.com web site. Also clearly stated on the Teen Newsweek site is that much of its content is derived from Newsweek articles. (February 21) Reader's Digest Association (RDA) will be providing editorial content for Amazon.com's The Family Handyman and American Woodworker. RDA will also be collaborating with CBS News and the resulting news stories will appear in Reader's Digest as well as on CBS' 48 Hours news show. (February 21) Decanter's online site will be providing selected content to wine.com, including feature and tasting panel articles. (February 7) VNU eMedia will use content from its media-industry publications to supply Work.com, a business-resource web site, with material. (February 5) Time magazine will open its archive of feature profiles written on African-American leaders over the last 50 years to BlackPlanet.com. (February 5) experience Magazine will receive editorial content from the editorial staff at Forbes, following an announcement that Forbes and experience.com plan to create a joint venture to co-publish, manage and market experience Magazine. The quarterly title, launched in 1999, provides career information, guidance and insight to college students and emerging professionals. (January 31) Better Homes and Gardens Online will provide content to HomeAdvisor.com, starting sometime in the next few months. (January 31) The Knot, an online wedding destination and content provider to America Online, will provide content for Weddingpages, a title that provides localized wedding information to major markets. (January 31) Better Homes and Gardens, Ladies' Home Journal and Family Money, three very visible titles published by Meredith Corporation, will be sharing their most popular content with America Online. The multi-year agreement will place cooking, home improvement, gardening, health, family finance and lifestyle content across AOL, CompuServe, Netscape.com and AOLTV. (January 29) InformationWeek (CMP Media) and Automotive News (Crain Communications) will both immediately begin providing Work.com, an Internet resource for business, with daily news and articles as well as opinion pieces. (January 24) PC Magazine, Ziff Davis Smart Business for the New Economy, eWeek, Interactive Week, Sm@art Partner, Yahoo! Internet Life, FamilyPC, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Official U.S. Playstation Magazine, Expert gamer and Computer Gaming World are the 11 titles under the Ziff Davis Media umbrella whose online rights will be regained from CNET Networks. Originally, rights had been signed away for five years when CNET Networks purchased ZDNet. The rights reversal, following the transfer of web address ownerships in April, is expected within the next year. (January 24) The Motley Fool will be feeding financial education and analysis content to MSNBC.com, a highly rated web-based news site. Content providers already in place are The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Newsweek, Inside.com and Zdnet. (January 22) The Week, the working title of a newsweekly title being planned for launch in April by Dennis Publishing, will serve as a digest of the best reporting from publications across the U.S., including newspapers and magazines. According to a Media Life Magazine report on January 12, sources will be attributed where necessary. That sounds less than reassuring, doesn't it? Keep your eye out for a title change before the launch date. (January 15) Content Watch 2000 WeMedia, a bimonthly magazine covering lifestyle and access issues for people with disabilities, will place its content on audiotape for the blind and visually impaired. WeMedia Inc. has partnered with The Jewish Guild for the Blind in this effort. (December 18) Modern Healthcare's web-based news and articles will be offered to subscribers of Managed Care On-Line (MCOL) and Global Health Resources.com, following a partnership agreement between MCOL and Modern Healthcare. (December 18) Oxygen Media has reduced the number of web sites it runs from 17 to four. Some of the content will be farmed to the remaining sites which are Oxygen, Oprah, Thrive and Young Audiences. Cancelled sites include Moms Online, BreakupGirl and ka-Ching. (December 6) Content from 19 Hachette Filipacchi Magazines' titles will be broadcast in two to three minute programming segments at shopping malls throughout the U.S. by the end of 2001, courtesy of Skytron, a broadcast company based in Irvine, Calif. (December 4) Outside Magazine will be sharing content with Away.com, a vacation travel web site. The two entities will create a separate online adventure travel site, as yet unnamed. (December 4) BusinessWeek Online will be providing daily business news and information to Work.com starting today, including trends and issues, small business and e-business news, personal investing and global finance information. (December 4) People, Coastal Living, Parenting, Cooking Light, Health, Sunset, and Real Simple, part of the 36 titles published by Time-Warner may soon "allow some content to transfer to competitors." This is a direct result of the Federal Trade Commission seeking equity in content distribution from the proposed AOL/Time-Warner merger. (December 4) Harper's Bazaar is planning to launch its web site in February. Despite the fact that owner Hearst Corporation also owns 46 percent of Women.com, content from the title will not appear there because the focus of both have been deemed incompatible. This is not the case for Cosmopolitan, Redbook and other women's titles. (November 29) Buyside Magazine, a monthly publication for institutional investors, will appear for the first time online at Buyside.com on December 5, 2000. (November 29) Babybug, Muse, and other Cricket Magazine Group publications, will be providing editorial content to family Internet site KidsEdge.com. (November 29) Garden.com has folded and is planning to sell off all its assets, which include its editorial content. If you have written for the website and didn't sell all rights, make sure your work is not sold to another party. (November 22) EE Times and Electronic Buyers' News is being widely circulated throughout Asia as of the October issue, following a joint venture agreement between CMP Media Inc. and Global Source. The collaboration combines the broad-based licensed content form CMP Media's Electronics Group with the circulation infrastructure of Global Sources, whose audience includes technology decision makers in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. (November 22) Vogue, Glamour, Mademoiselle, House & Garden, GQ, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and all other titles published by Condé Nast, will have companion web sites by the end of 2001. The first title to launch is The New Yorker, scheduled for January. (November 20) An undetermined number of American magazines will be published online at ChinaPop.com for the Chinese-language market. R.R. Donnellley & Sons is partnering with Chicago-based China Online to convince U.S. titles to sign on for the venture. The Chinese market is chiefly interested in titles covering fashion, children, home improvement, sports and entertainment. (November 20) eCompany Now is set to share its content with the recently launched companion web site, eCompany.com. Both are owned by Vignette Corp. (November 6) RedHerring.com is getting set to contribute as many as three articles a day from its site to www.punto-com.com and www.ponto-com.com after being translated into Spanish and Portuguese respectively. (September 27) Casino Journal Magazine, Casino Player, Strictly Slots, Atlantic City Insider, Nevada Hospitality and National Gaming Summary, published by Casino Journal Publishing Group, will provide content to Playsys.com for an initial period of two years. (September 18) ATV Sport, American Rider, Rider, SnowGoer, Snowmobile Week and Watercraft World, all sports magazines published by Ehlert Publishing Group, are possible candidates to contribute content to Rivals.com, a sport news site. (September 18) Industry Standard and Inside.com will be sharing content with a new, unnamed title due to launch later this year, a collaboration between the two publishing houses. The weekly publication will cover the digital transformation of the entertainment and information industries. (August 23) National Geographic will be sharing articles and photos with iExplore. The National Geographic Society has a 30 percent stake in the Internet travel company. (August 23) Canadian publisher Hollinger Inc. has sold its 85 trade and directory magazines to CanWest Global Communications. They were purchased as a group because they have "potential value in terms of content for specialty television," said a CanWest spokesperson. (August 2) InformationWeek and InternetWeek, along with many other tech titles under the CMP Media umbrella, may soon be feeding content to several of CMP's online communities. The company is partnering with ChannelWave to create a virtual network, much like PennNet and IndustryClick. These services exist to help companies bring together previously published news, commentary and analysis along with other resources, a continuing trend that writers need to keep their eye on. (July 26) Of the 127 magazines published by Cahners Business Information, 30 b-2-b titles will be supplying content to Web sites and subscribers via ScreamingMedia. No word yet on which titles will be plundered. (July 10) Photographic Processing, a Cygnus publication, has launched a web site at labsonline.com, with articles and other content available from the print magazine. (June 28) Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Country Living and seven other Hearst titles will be providing content for uk.women.com, a new Internet site targeted at potentially six million women in Great Britain. The venture is a collaboration between Hearst's National Magazine Company division and Women.com, a content provider for the Far East and Latin American markets. (June 26) Newsweek has been sharing limited content with The Washington Post and MSNBC.com over the last few months. With the recent launch of Newsweek.MSNBC.com, a news web site created and maintained by all three companies, editorial content and co-branded segments will be freely exchanged. (June 21) Business 2.0 will be sharing content with its five current international editions, located in South Africa, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia and the most recent launch in the U.K. By 2001, this global exchange of articles between Imagine Media's Business 2.0 editions will also include planned publications for Germany, Israel, South Korea, Italy, France, Mexico and Chile. (June 19) Car & Driver and Woman's Day are both slated to provide content to interactive television programs being developed by Hachette Filipacchi's parent company Lagardere and OpenTV. (June 19) StockMaster.com, recently purchased by Red Herring Communications, will give web site visitors "the added benefit of access to Redherring.com's in-depth editorial insight and analysis on topics including technology, investing and business." (May 23) Florida Lawyer, a new title launched this month by American Lawyer Media (ALM), will primarily cover local issues but also mix in editorial content from ALM's other publications, 20 potential article donors in all. (May 1) American Baby, Healthy Kids, First Year of Life, Childbirth, Primeros 12 Meses and Healthy Kids en Español, all published by Primedia's American Baby Group, will contribute content to Latin America's largest baby-focus website, TodoBeBe. Primedia acquired a share of TodoBebe and will now reach millions of Spanish and Portuguese speaking parents. (April 25) More, a title for American women over 40, will be providing fashion and beauty tip content to the new Style & Beauty Channel at ThirdAge.com, a baby boomer Internet site owned by ThirdAge Media. Although the companies have joined forces to create this new website page, it is not clear if content from More will be original or taken directly from the print publication. (April 24) Salon, an opinion e-zine, will share its content with SpeakOut.com, a website devoted to activism.(April 24) Forbes material could find its way into classroom books, a service known as custom academic publishing. Forbes sold off its custom publishing division to Thompson Learning and reached the licensing agreement. (April 24)

Warner. It is unclear whether content will flow from Time Digital to AOL. Smart Business, PC Magazine, Yahoo! Internet Life, Interactive Week, PC Week (eWeek as of May 8, 2000) and Smart Reseller, titles under the Ziff-Davis Publishing umbrella that was recently sold, may have content appear online for ZDNet through the next five years in return for a royalty.
