Want to write about
men's fashion? Query DETAILS. Yes, DETAILS!
March
21, 2000 - The 'lad' magazine Details will cease as of its May
issue and reappear in the fall as a men's fashion magazine.
The publisher, Condé Nast Publications announced that it will send
the failing Details to its Fairchild Publications division,
which will position the new Details as the consumer counterpart
to the men's wear trade magazine, DNR. This will emulate the relationship
the women's magazine W has with Women's Wear Daily.
Condé Nast did not speculate on the reason for their decision but
Details has been withering during the last half of 1999 with less
than a 3% increase in circulation. Newsstand sales were down 15% and ad
pages down a whopping 22%.
However from our viewpoint, conflicting positioning is a possibility as
Condé Nast has insisted on calling Details "a fashion monthly
for young men" while media generally considered it among the 'lad' magazines,
along with such titles as Maxim and EMAP's new FHM.
As to staff, it was announced that the brand new editor-in-chief, Mark
Golin, will leave the company, a spokeswoman said. No other decisions
as to editorial personnel was announced. The staff will meet with Condé
Nast management and be given information as to their future.
