Freelance writers now handle majority of content at Sports Illustrated for Women June 6, 2001 - What is out at Sports Illustrated for Women are profiles of high school and college athletes, and fitness and workout regimen stories. What is in are articles about harder science issues like genetic engineering and athletic performance. The content is also being skewed to an audience in their 30s instead of the traditional 20-something-year-old, and deeper thinking on subjects is key to capturing managing editor Susan Casey's attention. Just as content is widely changing, the onboard editorial staff has been let go in favor of using more experienced freelances who can capture a "literary" tone. The title is currently published eight times per year by publisher AOL Time Warner and has a ratebase of 400,000.
