What part of "sophistication" does Mademoiselle not understand?

June 28, 2000 - Mademoiselle's content is undergoing a change in order to communicate with its twenty-something audience in a new, sophisticated tone of voice. So why are some of the proposed features titled Millie goes shopping, Millie gets gorgeous, and Millie goes to Hollywood?

It seems that the new hires, publisher Lori Burgess and editor-in-chief Mandi Norwood, are sending a mixed message, one that writers might find difficult to understand.

To add to the confusion, consider the title's new tag line, "The magazine for your me years."

The challenge for writers will be to write content that seamlessly links sophistication, a term normally associated with worldliness and elegance, to the singular viewpoint of "me."

Ms. Burgess, fresh from Primedia's Seventeen magazine, and Ms. Norwood, formerly with British Cosmopolitan, are taking over the helm of Condé Nast's title with a circulation of 1.1 million. Writers should reevaluate queries to take into account the changes at the magazine. Check our database for more information.
