New Florida fishing magazine tries to lure readers

Sept 20, 2003 - The publishers of G.A.F.F. (Gulf Atlantic Florida Fishing) Magazine is trying something new to get their new magazine going: Ignorance and inexperience.

First-time publishers Matt Draper and Pete Rumenik released their new statewide magazine featuring saltwater fish and bikinis last month.

" One of the reasons this magazine is working is Matt and I don't know what we're doing," Rumenik, 35, said during an interview with Tallahassee.com.

The first issue distributed 10,000 copies statewide and the website is http://www.gaffmag.net

The free publication was a mix of editorial and advertising on electronics and entertainment products and will continue with the same format electronically. The quarterly title will be mailed to Town & Country subscribers and will be available on the newsstand for $4.95 per issue. It is aimed at upscale vacationers ''who want the best.''

Town & Country's Editor-in-Chief, Pamela Fiori will perform the same function for the test magazine.

Front Porch is back

Sept 13, 2003 - This magazine ceased publication as a newspaper insert in March 2003. In October 2003 it will be tested as a weekly bound-in page in participating newspapers, usually in the lifestyle section.

There are two sections to this page: The Front Porch - an entertaining mix of reader-provided content for the whole family; and Fresh Voices - an interactive page targeting young adults 18-30 years, but with wide appeal.

Planned circulation is 350,000 for this fall. Participating newspapers range from the 72,000 circulation Washington Times to the 3,500 circulation The Tiller & Toiler of Lamed, KS.

New southern magazine by first-time publisher

Sept 9, 2003 - A political consultant with no publishing experience is launching a regional magazine called South.

The bimonthly will hit the newsstands on Sept 23 and will be available in 13 southeastern states. The initial circulation is reported as 50,000.

"There is a place in the market for a publication like this," the Brent Alexander says. "Magazines like Southern Living and Southern Accents and Veranda have branded the south from a shelter standpoint. We're going to do it from a lifestyle and entertainment standpoint."

Biography to be scaled down

September 8, 2003 - The cable TV channel A&E, jointly owned by Disney and Hearst, is tired of losing $5 million a year and is pulling Biography magazine from the newsstands. From now on, it will become a quarterly marketing vehicle as a free fan club magazine.

Although touted as a brilliant idea when launched six years ago, the magazine failed to catch on. The number of ad pages never reached expectations. The problem appears to have been Biography's audience, which qualified neither as mass or niche in the eyes of advertisers. It simply had no endemic advertising base, industry observers have noted.

Sept 5, 2003 - A King County (WA) businssman is launching Persona, a monthly lifestyle magazine.

Owner and publisher Juan Mayans has tested the idea with three earlier issues called Discovering Latinos, and is personally funding the magazine but is seeking investors.

Persona is filled with a mix of stories on celebrities, financial advice, recipes and film reviews - with a Latino focus. But it's not just for Latinos. Persona is written in English to appeal to anyone with an affinity for Latino culture.

It will be distributed to about 500 Latin-goods stores from Everett to Tacoma as well as the Wenatchee area.
