September 26, 2001 - The only high fashion magazine for full-figured American women has ceased publication after four years. The final edition of Mode is the October issue. The title was published by Freedom Magazines, a division of Freedom Communications, Inc.

Smithsonian magazine increases number of opinion pieces

September 10, 2001 - As of the October issue, there will be a new look to the monthly Smithsonian, some of it between the covers. Editor-in-chief Carey Winfrey is commissioning and will be introducing more opinion pieces as well as creating several new columns. It's time for writers interested in querying this publication to take a second look and consider pitching "eye-popping" stories.

Writers beware of submitting to remaining H&S Media titles

September 10, 2001 - H&S Media owes approximately $1 million to a number of creditors, a portion of which belongs to freelancers. The company continues to publish Mary-Kate and Ashley, WOW, Last Lap, Teen Style, Edge and Mary Beth's Crafty Kids. However, between filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and attempting to find a buyer for the remaining titles in its ownership, writers should be cautious in submitting queries and articles for consideration.

Red Herring reduces publication frequency

September 10, 2001 - Red Herring, the business technology title, will reduce its publication schedule from twice-monthly to monthly, starting with the November issue.

Maximum Golf ceases publication

September 10, 2001 - Maximum Golf, the sports title geared to a new generation of young golfers, has ceased publication less than a year and a half after its debut. The magazine was published by News Corp.'s News America Magazines, Inc. subsidiary.

Wireless technology to be covered in new magazine

September 10, 2001 - Wireless Future Magazine, a new industry publication, is due to debut in March 2002. The focus will be vision and insight from industry and independent sources about wireless technology and services that are projected to become commercially available in the near to far future. The title is published by Wirelesslee Inc. under the direction of President and Editorial director Rikki Lee.

New title for IT professionals launches

September 10, 2001 - .NET Magazine is the title of a new monthly for IT professionals covering strategic and technical issues of implementing Microsoft's .Net platform. The October launch issue will be sent to 350,000 IT buyers and be followed by monthly publication and delivery to approximately 120,000 managers, business decision makers, system architects, analysts and administrators. The title is published by Palo Alto, Calif.-based Fawcette Technical Publications with Jim Minatel as editor-in-chief.

Book magazine to increase publication frequency; grows circulation by over 650 percent since last year

September 5, 2001 - Book magazine is growing by leaps and bounds. Just one year ago, the three-year-old title had a circulation of just 150,000; the September/October issue will hit one million. Coverage continues to focus on new book reviews, author interviews and investigative pieces. Publication frequency will increase to 10 times per year in 2002. Style 24/7 hits the newsstands today

September 5, 2001 - Style 24/7, a new fashion and celebrity magazine, hit the newsstands today, just days before models will hit the runway for Fashion Week in New York. Three more biweekly issues are scheduled before launching into a weekly schedule noted editor Niro who also handles Fashion Wear Daily's website. The title is published by American Media, publisher of the Star and National Enquirer.

Detour Magazine set to detour again?

September 5, 2001 - Detour, the 14-year-old fashion title published by Detour Magazine Inc., having survived numerous problems including an SEC investigation in 2000 and reduction in publishing frequency this year, is now finding itself strapped for cash. The only solutions are to establish a new cash flow, enter a joint publishing arrangement or liquidate. The president and CEO of the company, Andrew Left, resigned earlier this month. Writers beware.


YM has named a new editor-in-chief, Christina Kelly, formerly the title's executive editor. Ms. Kelly succeeds Annemarie Iverson who left for the editor-in-chief position at Seventeen. (September 26)

Luxury Golf is expanding its content to include coverage of exclusive fashions and jewelry, home décor, fine dining, automobiles, yachts and private aircraft. The Luxury Media Corporation's title will debut the changes in the September/October issue. (September 26)

Genome News Network (GNN) has named a new editor-in-chief, Barbara J. Culliton. The GNN produces an online news magazine about genomics in medicine, biomedical research, and agriculture. In addition, GNN will create an on-going series of print publications about advances in genomics. The network was recently acquired by The Institute for Genomic Research from Celera Genomics. Southwest Florida Business, and its owner Voyager Media, Inc., have been acquired by Gulfshore Media, Inc. (September 26)

Commercial Building was recently acquired by Mercor Media from Stamats Communications, Inc. The relaunched title will focus content on major issues and changing roles that affect general and specialty contractors. (September 26)

ISLANDS has named a new editor-in-chief, James Badham, replacing Joan Tapper who resigned last month. Spa's editor-in-chief Maryann Hammers has also resigned. Her unnamed replacement will start on October 1. Both titles are published by Islands Media. (September 24)

AmericanStyle and Niche magazines have named a new managing editor, John Driscoll. (September 24)

Teddy Bear Review has been acquired by Jones Publishing: PO Box 5000, Iola, WI 54945. (September 24)

Premiere has named a new editor-in-chief, Peter Herbst, replacing Michael Solomon. (September 24)

Seventeen has named a new editor-in-chief, Annemarie Iverson, formerly the editor-in-chief of YM. Ms. Iverson replaces Patrice Adcroft. (September 24)

Forensic Nurse will debut in November for forensic nurses, medical examiners, coroners, laboratory personnel, hospital administrators and public/government health officials. At-Home Mother is temporarily on hold according to National Association of At-Home Mothers' founder Jeanette Lisefski. The association, located in Fairfield, Iowa, distributes the quarterly magazine to its membership. (September 19)

Current Methods is a new civil engineering journal published by Haestad Press, a subsidiary of Haestad Methods located in Waterbury, Conn. Coverage will include the latest innovations in water resources modeling and practical modeling case studies. (September 19)

ESPN The Magazine will raise its ratebase by 21 percent on January 7, 2002, from 1.24 million to 1.5 million. (September 19)

OG is the new name for Organic Gardening starting with the September/October issue. The bimonthly title is published by Rodale. (September 19)

The Hollywood Reporter has named a editor, Howard Burns, formerly the title's deputy editor who also acted as interim editor since April 30. (September 19)

Broadband Week, a Cahners Business Information's spinoff title will cease publication and be folded back into its parent, Multichannel News. (September 19)

Upstart, a Primedia Business Magazines & Media's spinoff title will cease publication and be folded back into its parent, Telephony. (September 19)

Utah Business magazine named a new senior editor, Barry Scholl. (September 17)

The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) has revised the requirements for submitting manuscripts to 12 leading biomedical publications. The new rules can be found at www.icmje.org. (September 10)

New York magazine has named a news features editor, Joanna Coles, formerly the New York bureau chief of the Times of London. (September 10)

WWD.com, the Fairchild Publications' fashion website, has laid off its editor-in-chief, Stephen Dowdell. (September 10)

Knowledge Management, a Freedom Technology Media Group title, will cease publication following the September issue. Resources are being funneled into its www.destinationKM.com website. (September 10)

Energy IT, published by Platts, the energy information and market services unit of The McGraw-Hill Companies, has announced a new editor-in-chief, Jon Arnold. (September 10)

Petroleum Economist and its publisher Gulf Publishing Company has been acquired by Euromoney Institutional Investor PLC. (September 10)

Seventeen magazine will add six international editions - Venezuela and Mexico in September, Indonesia in November, China and Russia in December and Columbia in early 2002. The magazine launched its Philippine edition on July 15. (September 10)

Western Horseman has been acquired by Augusta, Ga.-based Morris Communications from Western Horseman Inc. (September 10)

Internet World has cut its publication frequency from 22 times a year to monthly. (September 10)

Oxford American, a literary and music title for Southerners, is reducing its publication frequency from bimonthly to quarterly. (September 10)

Variety and Daily Variety will reinstate their temporarily suspended editor-in-chief, Peter Bart, on September 10. Mr. Bart's suspension followed the Los Angeles magazine article that reported unethical journalistic behavior on the part of Mr. Bart. (September 5)

Poder is the new name of Punto-com magazine, starting with the October issue. The Miami-based title, published by Zoom Media Group, covers the regional Latin American economy. (September 5)

New Media Creative, a monthly UK-based Centaur Publications' title covering website design and online advertisement, is folding into its sister publication New Media Age. (September 5)

The Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry has named a new editor, Thomas F. Trinkner, D.D.S. (September 5)
