Civilization stumbles; no recovery news yet

September 27, 2000 - Civilization, the 6-year-old Library of Congress-associated magazine published by Worth Media is set to step out of the arena after the October/November issue. The title is in the process of separating itself from the Library of Congress, while Worth Media will retain the trademark.

A Worth Media spokesperson indicated that they are "committed to the Civilization brand and [have] big plans for its future." Writers beware.

Modern Maturity's editorial content splits

September 11, 2000 - Admitting it is becoming nearly impossible to edit a single magazine that appeals to people from age 50 to 100, Modern Maturity is going to split its content along the 65-year-old age line.

7 million readers from 56- to 65-years-old will receive the title with content geared towards their interests, while the other 10.9 million readers 66-year-old and over will be attracted by the title's coverage geared towards their concerns. September 20, 2000 - Metalmag.com, circulated to 29,000 metal roofing and building contractors, architects and owners, has recently launched its Fall 2000 issue. Extreme sports pubs fold, two others don't launch

September 18, 2000 - Eight days ago, Wave Action, Pit Bodyboard, Wakeboard and MXRage ceased publication. Part of Broadband Interactive Group's Bluetorch, the quarterly titles proved to be unprofitable. Two new planned titles, Skate and Swerve, have also been scrapped.

In Style has appointed a new editorial manager, Lavinel Savu, formerly the founding managing editor of O, The Oprah Magazine. (September 13)

Inside: The Business of Entertainment, Media & Technology has chosen an editor for the new title, Richard Siklos, who is also the business editor for Inside.com. (September 13)

Coast Magazine, the California-based lifestyle publication with a circulation of 46,000, was purchased by Freedom Communications. The newspaper publisher has its eye on creating a magazine division catering to the Orange County market. (September 13)

The Private Equity Analyst, a newsletter published by Asset Alternatives, Inc., is now under the umbrella of Wicks Business Information. (September 13)

Zillions, Consumer Union's 20-year-old bimonthly consumer report for kids, has ceased print publication in favor of going strictly online. The cyberzine, Zillions.org (not .com), launched earlier this month to "reach more young people" and combat rising postage and paper costs. (September 13)

TelecomClick (.com), an IndustryClick web site community for the telecommunications industry, has named a content director, Dan O'Shea (doshea@industryclick.com). Mr. O'Shea was formerly the founding editor of Upstart. (September 13)

Shape, a health and fitness title from Weider Publications, will launch its seventh international edition in October with Shape South Africa. Touchline Media is the joint venture partner. (September 13)

Real Simple has a new managing editor, Carry Tuhy, who has been filling in for that position since May. (September 13)

Cosmopolitan appointed a new executive editor, Michele Promaulayko. (September 13)

Leading the Artful Life is a recently launched newsletter which will be published six times a year to subscribers of Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion. The focus is on easy craft projects, simple recipes, useful gardening tips and decorating ideas, along with flea market and antiques show listings. (September 11)

PC Magazine and Smart Business for the New Economy will move to the business-publications group of Ziff-Davis Media, leaving only Yahoo! Internet Life, FamilyPC and Expedia Travels Magazine (soon to be launched) to form the consumer magazine group. (September 11)

Folio: has named a new editor, Teresa Ennis, formerly the title's senior managing editor. (September 11)

Fortune has appointed a new senior editor for the Technology section, Peter H. Lewis, formerly with The New York Times. (September 6)

Business Finance, Windows 2000 Magazine, NEWS/400, SQL Server and Selling AS/400 Solutions are now part of Penton Media's Advanced Technology Media division after being acquired from Duke Communications. (September 6)

FHM will be launched in Hungary towards the end of September, the third international push for this magazine. The title is aiming for publication in 20 countries by April 2001 and is now more than half way there. (September 6)
