October 31, 2001 - Intersection is the name a new car-culture title being launched by UK-based Dazed Group. The first issue is due out in February, with a preview issue already on newsstands.

Possible new writing opportunities at Prevention Magazine

October 29, 2001 - Prevention will soon be providing daily health tips and practical advice on health, fitness, nutrition, alternative medicine and healthy active living at iVillageHealth.com. Under the direction of Frank Dragotta, general manager, Prevention brand development, Prevention magazine will own and produce the site as well as provide editorial content and in-depth research by Prevention magazine expert editors.

Last Lap and Crafty Kids are in, WOW is out

October 29, 2001 - Former H&S Media titles purchased by Kappa Publishing Group are now undergoing the final selection process of which titles will continue to be published. So far, Last Lap and Crafty Kids will be kept alive, while WOW subscribers will be folded into other wrestling titles. "We 're trying to get these new titles into the groove and probably in another week or two we'll talk about what other titles we'll want to resurrect or fold," said Despina McNulty, president of Kappa.

Travelocity folds

October 24, 2001 - Baseline is the title of a new magazine for senior-level IT and business executives. Full Story

Appellation reincarnated as Wine Country Living

October 24, 2001 - Next month should see the reintroduction of Appellation magazine by Sonoma, Calif.-based publisher Appellation L.L.C. The new title of the magazine is Wine Country Living. Editorial focus on wine and travel will be augmented with additional coverage about homes, cooking, culture and lifestyle. The title aims to double its ratebase, from 50,000 to 100,000.

Mutual Funds to broaden editorial scope

October 22, 2001 - Starting with the January issue, Mutual Funds will include additional investing and financial-planning option coverage. New departments will focus on investing directly in stocks, sector analysis and financial and retirement planning. The title also added a tagline, "Invest. Plan. Succeed." A slight name change is possible in the future.

Entrepreneur to create additional content

October 17, 2001 - Entrepreneur magazine will provide original content for iWork Advisor, a small business online magazine owned by DigitalWork Inc. The bimonthly "title" will be distributed to over 300,000 small businesses. Articles and content will focus on challenges facing small businesses including sales, marketing, technology and financing.

Bon voyage to Expedia Travels

October 15, 2001 - Expedia Travels, a Ziff Davis Media Inc. title, will halt publication following the November issue, just a year after its launch. Approximately 20 Expedia Travels' staffers are being laid off, including editor-in-chief Gary Walther.

Brill's Content ceases publication

October 15, 2001 - In a memo to Brill's Content and Inside.com staffers, Steve Brill announced the suspension of operation of Brill's Content magazine and a downsizing of Inside.com. Many of the staffers will be laid off immediately.

H&S Media titles get sold

October 15, 2001 - WOW, Last Lap, Teen Style, Edge and Mary Beth's Crafty Kids have been acquired by Fort Washington, Penn.-based Kappa Publishing Group, Inc. when it purchased almost all of H&S Media. Only the magazine Mary-Kate and Ashley was passed over, with the title's fate to be determined on October 23. While the staffs have all been let go, Kappa and its affiliate companies need to sort out details regarding which magazines they will continue or cease to publish.

Four teen titles change their beat

October 15, 2001 - Tiger Beat, Teen Beat, Bop and 16 are undergoing some changes, not only in publishing frequency, but editorial headquarters as well. Full Story

Super new title for gamers

October 15, 2001 - Gear magazine is partnering with Los Angeles-based Super Media to launch a 24-page preview insert of gaming title Super in its December issue. Gaming content will be handled by Super's staff, headed by founder Van Burnham. Burnham plans to roll her magazine out as a 250,000-circulation monthly in the first quarter of 2002. Gear needs to see how the marketplace reacts to the insert before any decision is made to launch Super as a stand-alone or continue as an insert. In the meantime, Burnham says she will continue to hunt for other potential partners.

Family Building new title about infertility

October 15, 2001 - A new quarterly title, Family Building, explores the nuances of infertility and associated choices that often must be made. Full Story

New magazine targets Austin, Texas area

October 10, 2001 - Austin Outside is a newly launched bi-monthly outdoor title for nonprofessional cyclists, hikers, runners, hunters and fisherman in the Austin, Texas area. New men's title to launch

October 10, 2001 - A new urban-men's magazine, King, is set to debut November 27. Articles will cover women, automobiles and interviews with rappers and sport figures. The title is published by Harris Publications located at 1115 Broadway, New York, New York 10010; (212) 807-7100.

American Media offices temporarily closed

October 8, 2001 - The offices of American Media, publishers of the National Enquirer and other tabloids, has closed its doors following the death of Robert Stevens, a photo editor for The Sun, who died from anthrax. The building at 5401 Broken Sound Blvd in Boca Raton, Fla. is closed indefinitely. Officials have set up a hotline for employees of America Media at 800-342-3557.

New title to launch for software developers

Investor's Business Daily adds unique content

October 8, 2001 - Investor's Business Daily is adding new content that will further facilitate business and investing decisions. Editor-in-chief Wes Mann is overseeing the expansion of business and management coverage along with navigation and graphic redesigns. Check the title's website for a closer look.

New quarterly for southern Nevada

October 8, 2001 - The Las Vegas Review-Journal is putting together a new magazine titled Cerca, covering the culture and landscape of southern Nevada. Writers guidelines can be found on the title's website. The title will be distributed in bookstores and newsstands.

Storage magazine to cover computer data storage

October 3, 2001 - Storage, a new monthly title launching in March 2002, will provide 200,000 IT professionals and storage executives with in-depth analysis and forward-looking guidance on managing, storing, networking, and safeguarding the data at the core of large organizations. The tagline for the publication led by editor-in-chief Mark Schlack is "Managing the Information that Drives the Enterprise." Storage is published by TechTarget, a Needham, MA-based media company.

Mademoiselle ceases publication

October 1, 2001 - Condé Nast ceased publishing Mademoiselle as of today. The women's magazine was 66-years-old. The weak economy and ineffective repositioning of the title's content were cited as main reasons for Mademoiselle's demise.

Glamour revamps content emphasis

BBW trying to stay afloat

October 1, 2001 - BBW, the only plus-size magazine on the market following the demise of Mode Magazine, is experiencing its own financial difficulties. According to Sally Smith, editor-in-chief, the title is seeking means to publish the November/December issue following the cancellation of the September/October issue. ESPN The Magazine has named a new senior editor, Mike Levine, formerly the executive editor of the Middletown, NY Times Herald-Record. (October 29)

EE Times has named a new editor-in-chief, Brian Fuller. In addition, Anthony Cataldo has been promoted to EE Times news editor and Tim Moran is the newly appointed EE Times online editor. The title is published by CMP Media LLC. (October 22)

EDN Asia has a named a new editor-in-chief, Manju Nath, formerly the title's technical editor. (October 22)

Writer's Digest has appointed a new editor-in-chief, David A. Fryxell. (October 22)

Automotive News International will cease publication following the October issue. The title was published by Crain Communications' Automotive Group. (October 22)

Progressive Grocer and Supermarket Business Magazine will merge, operating under the Progressive Grocer name starting with the January 2002 issue. Both titles are published by VNU Business Publications USA. (October 17)

Editor & Publisher has laid off its executive editor, Steve Yahn, a position that may be permanently eliminated. William Gloede, editor-in-chief, will assume Mr. Yahn's duties. Also cut at E&P was Joel Davis, the West Coast editor. The title is published by VNU. (October 17)

Windows Developer Magazine, the new title for CMP Media's Windows Developer's Journal, named a new executive editor, John Dorsey. Mr. Dorsey is changing the editorial focus to more closely cover the changing Windows development market. The new title's subhead is, "Application Development from Windows to Web." (October 15)

Windows & .NET Magazine is the new title for Penton Media's Windows 2000 Magazine starting with the January issue. "As the technology market moves toward a `software as service' environment, it is our editorial mission and responsibility to our readers to lead and interpret the transition from a Windows-centric to a Web services-centric world," noted Karen Forster, editor-in-chief. Northstar Travel Media LLC is the new name for the Cahners Travel Group which was acquired by Boston Ventures Management, Inc. Titles include Travel Weekly, Travel Age West, Meetings & Conventions and Weissmann Travel Reports. (October 8)

The New Yorker has raised its ratebase from 800,000 to 850,000, a 6.2 percent gain. (October 8)

The Ziff Davis Media Game Group has a new overall editorial director, John Davison, who will also continue to be editor-in-chief of Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine. (October 8)

Database Trends and Applications magazine, a monthly title for IS managers, was acquired by Unisphere Media, LLC from Thurman Marketing Services. (October 8)
