Faith Talk Magazine set to debut

November 27, 2002 – A major Christian broadcasting company has announced plan to launch a magazine that will complement its talk and education filled radio shows.

Faith Talk Magazine is a cooperative effort between Salem Publishing, a division of Salem Communications, and Salem's talk/teaching radio stations. The magazine will feature inspirational stories and profiles of Christians and Bible teachings.

Interested writers should watch for the new magazine.

Sign of the times: Transportation Security magazine debuts

November 27, 2002 – With the need for secure airports and travel following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, PRIMEDIA has announced the launch of Transportation Security magazine.

The publication is a spin-off of the publisher’s Access Control & Security Systems magazine. The new publication will focus on providing news and information surrounding the development and implementation of technology in airports all over the country.

According to the publisher, the magazine will provide security professionals with cutting-edge articles and in-depth feature stories on the most current trends in the industry.

If you have expertise in this area, watch for the magazine’s debut this month.

Arise Magazine struggles to stay up

November 25, 2002 – Two-year-old Arise Magazine has announced a fundraising campaign to sustain the publication.

Dubbed “Lift Every Voice,” the effort is appeal of financial support for the monthly magazine that covers “sexually diverse people of African descent.”

Writers should be aware of the magazine’s financial situation.

Ziff Davis launches GMR magazine

November 25, 2002 – In a bid to capitalize on the growing video game market, Ziff Davis has announced the debut of GMR magazine.

The monthly magazine will cover games played on the PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC and Game Boy Advance. Simon Cox, creative director for Ziff Davis Media, will be editor-in-chief of the new magazine. The periodical is part of a combined effort between Ziff and Electronic Boutique, a specialty retailer of electronics games.

Writers who know their way around a joystick should watch for the magazine’s January debut.

Advance Publications reportedly slow to pay writers

November 25, 2002 – According to a story in the New York Post, powerhouse magazine publisher Condé Nast has freelance writers waiting longer than usual to get paid.

Conde Nast, part of S.I. Newhouse Jr.’s Advance Publishing division, is bracing for some 250 layoffs. Condé Nast is taking the biggest hit among the Newhouse family's Advance Publications, which also includes Fairchild, the Golf Digest Cos. and Parade.

The cuts are part of the parent company's move to consolidate back-office functions from New York City to Wilmington, Del. The accounts payable department is also being replaced. Checks that used to take one to process are now taking three, according the New York Post.

Writers who have contracted with Condé Nast should be aware of the reported delays.

Intermezzo launches nationally this month

November 18, 2002 – Aiming to offer readers “an escape from the stress of everyday life,” Intermezzo will offer coverage food, wine, travel and home.

Published by T.F. Associates, Inc., the magazine will present “broad, yet detailed, coverage of fine food and wine, home decor/renovation and travel, all in one beautifully written and photographed magazine," says Editorial Director Roseann Tully.

Interested writers should look for the magazine’s premier issue.

Trump launches Trump World

November 18, 2002 – Real estate titan Donald Trump is launching a magazine bearing his name.

Trump World is a luxury lifestyle magazine that will reflect its namesake’s tastes. Although his name will be on the magazine, Trump will have little involvement in the publication.

If you can write about wealth and luxury for the wealthy, watch for the magazine’s debut for possible writing opportunities.

Kitchen Sink makes its debut

November 13, 2002 – Kitchen Sink, a quarterly publication that bills itself as a magazine “for people who think too much,” has released its first issue.

The Oakland-based magazine is a nonprofit publication that will also publish monthly Web content. Kitchen Sink aims to explore independent art, identity, culture and politics through provocative essays. Jen Loy is editor-in-chief.

Another celebrity gossip magazine in the works?

November 11, 2002 – Time, Inc. is said to be planning to add a new celebrity title to the already crowded marketplace.

Carol Wallace, former managing editor at People magazine, has been working on a prototype on what is being envisioned as a photo-heavy magazine with a tabloid sensibility.

Time says it probably won’t launch the magazine in 2003 but writers with a handle on celebrity news should keep an eye on newsstands.

Film company acquires sci-fi magazines

November 6, 2002 – Mindfire Entertainment has announced its purchase of Cinefantastique and Femme Fatales.

David E. Williams, former executive editor of features for The Hollywood Reporter, will serve as editor-in-chief of Cinefantastique, a science fiction, fantasy and horror magazine. The magazine will re-launch in January.

Mindfire has also acquired Femme Fatales, Cinefantastique’s sister publication. The magazine will be re-launched in 2003 as “a sci-fi Maxim,” company executives say.

Writers should watch for the magazines’ debuts and look for changes in the titles’ editorial focuses.

New Martha magazine won’t bear her name

November 4 2002 – Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia will roll out a four-issue test in January of a new magazine called Everyday Food.

In what may be a sign of Stewart’s financial and legal troubles, the new title will not bear her name. The magazine will feature fast, simple and healthy recipes, the company said. If successful, the magazine will be published ten times a year starting in September.

Writers should keep an eye on the new magazine and see how it fares.

Primedia agrees to part with American Baby

November 4, 2002 – Financially embattled publisher Primedia Inc. has announced plans to sell its American Baby group to Meredith Corp. for $115 million.

The American Baby group includes American Baby magazine, several quarterly publications, a sampling business, Web sites and the Baby Faire consumer expositions.

Previously, Primedia sold off Modern Bride magazine, Chicago magazine and Bacon's, a media information service.

Writers should watch future issues of American Baby for any changes in the magazine’s editorial focus.
