Revival of Shift doesn't necessarily spell end of freelance writer woes

November 20, 2000 - We reported on November 1 that Shift employees were working for free and freelance writers hadn't been paid since July. It looks like Toronto-based Multi-Vision Publishing will soon be the new owner of the title. The company also publishes Elm Street, a women's title, and Owl Canadian Family, a parenting title polybagged with children's title Owl. Writers should proceed with caution.

Venerable McCall's changes direction with Rosie in charge

Writers, don't let new postal rate hike take a bite out of your fees

November 13, 2000 - The US Postal Service originally proposed a 15 percent rate hike for mailing magazines starting in 2001. Today, the Postal Rate Commission announced its recommendation for a 9.9 percent hike instead.

The Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) spent $10 million on identifying cost-saving measures for periodical processing. Although "we achieved our objective of a single-digit rate increase," said Nina Link, president of the MPA, we "will continue to push for long-term reform of the postal system."

Writers, be aware that magazine publishers will be looking to make up for this loss in a variety of ways. Keep in mind that your work is no less valuable because mailing rates have changed substantially.

Sporting Goods Business mergers with Sports Trend; relaunch scheduled for mid-January

November 8, 2000 - Sporting Goods Business is merging with Sports Trend following Bill Communications' acquisition of Miller Freeman and the consolidation of the two companies' sports groups. Starting with the January 19, 2001 issue, the title will integrate content staples from both publications in 16 annual issues.

Hilary Cassidy, Sporting Goods Business' editor-in-chief, is now executive editor of the revamped magazine, which will be published under the Bill Communications Sports Group name.

A new consumer health site, RDHealth.com, is open to topic suggestions

Miami Business and Latin CEO both have a new executive editor, Eddie Dominguez. (November 29)

Frequent Flyer has ceased print publication, but is still online at www.frequentflyer.oag.com. (November 29)

J-14 has appointed a new editor-in-chief, Janet Giovanelli, formerly the title's executive editor. (November 22)

PC Magazine is adding two new issues in 2001, one in summer and one more in the fourth quarter, for a total of 24 issues next year. The frequency boost accommodates the increased need for technology information said editor-in-chief Michael J. Miller. (November 22)

XML Journal Magazine, a new title covering the XML computer language, launches its premier issue in December. The magazine will cover technology development, product reviews and interviews. (November 20)

Jump has a new editor, Richard Perez-Feria, following the relocation of the editorial offices from Woodland Hills, Calif. to New York City. Owner Weider Publications may be looking to sell the title in the very near future. (November 20)

Consultants News and Executive Recruiter, two of nine newsletters published by Kennedy Information, are now owned by the Bureau of National Affairs, following the acquisition of Kennedy Information last week. (November 20)

aMagazine, published by Asian-American magazine publisher aMedia, may be on the auction block along with the rest of the company. Staff layoffs have already started and merger talks with Click2Asia are rumored. (November 20)

Jane has a new entertainment editor, Jauretsi Saizarbitoria, formerly the special projects editor at Details. (November 20)

AmericanBaby.com has a new director of content development, Dottie Enrico. (November 20)

Philadelphia Magazine has named a new editor-in-chief, Loren Feldman, formerly the executive editor of George. (November 20)

AutoWeek has appointed a new associate editor, Jeff Sabatini, who will coordinate submissions from contributing columnists and oversee the Escape Roads department. (November 20)

Electronics Express, a monthly European Business Press publication for electronics professionals, has been acquired by CMP Media Inc. (November 20)

Personal Finance Online, a planned bi-monthly finance title launching in June 2001, will cover online financing options, online trading, loan and real estate options and money management. (November 20)

Epicurious has a new editor-in-chief, Elizabeth Shepard. Epicurious is an online food site and home to Gourmet and Bon Appetit magazines. (November 15)

Latina Magazine will soon be under the umbrella of Latina Media Ventures, a parent company created when a $20 million investment was made by Solera Capital. The funds will be used to expand the title into an online presence, broadcast media, and . . . other print content. (November 15)

Bloomberg Markets captured an annual Folio Magazine award, "best business magazine for editorial excellence." Entrants are judged by a panel of 40 media professionals on the title's ability to adhere to its editorial mission. (November 15)

Cooking Light has a new senior Healthy Living editor, Donna Raskin. (November 13)

The Source Sports will have a companion web site starting in December. The site will be part of The Source's brand-extension company, The Source Sports Multimedia Group. (November 13)

Shape's Fit Pregnancy will be launching an Hungarian edition according to publisher Weider Publications. (November 13)

101 Communications announced the closing of its New York offices, splitting all activities between its Massachusetts headquarters and office in Los Angeles. The company recently purchased IDG's FCW Government Technology Group which publishes Federal Computer Week and civic.com. (November 13)

Wired Magazine has named a new European editor, Barbara Erskine. (November 8)

QTMagazine, an online gay and lesbian travel magazine, was purchased by GSociety. (November 8)

Travel Canada Magazine is a new annual travel title covering Canadian travel, sight-seeing and shopping information. The publisher, Coast To Coast Distributing Company, plans a March 2001 launch in the U.S. (November 8)

Wireless Magazine, a new bimonthly Sys-Con Publications' title, will provide wireless industry information to a broad audience ranging from beginners to experts. Coverage includes product reviews, analysis and new technology previews. The title will debut with the January 2001 issue. (November 8)

MRO Today and Productivity, formerly published by Spectrum Business Communications, are now owned by Pfingsten Publishing. (November 6)

Copy Editor, a publishing industry newsletter founded by Mary Beth Protomastro, has been sold to McMurray Newsletters, publisher of Publications Management. (November 6)

Construction Materials Recycler, a newsletter purchased from RMR Publishing by GIE Media's Recycling Today Media Group, will merge with the publisher's bimonthly trade title, C&D Recycler. (November 6)

YM has a new executive editor, Christina Kelly, formerly the title's deputy editor. (November 6)

McCall's will be choosing a new editor-in-chief to replace Sally Koslow, who is leaving her position at the close of the March issue to pursue a corporate position. (November 6)

Gotham, a planned luxury lifestyle publication, has chosen an editor-in-chief, Joseph Steurer. Although we originally reported a mid-February launch, it looks like the new debut date will be sometime in March. (November 6)

Casino Journal and National Gaming Summary have been sold by owner Casino Journal Publishing Group to GEM Communications. The company still will publish Casino Player, Strictly Slots and Atlantic City Insider. (November 6)

Newsweek has named a new managing editor, Daniel Klaidman, formerly the title's Jerusalem bureau chief. (November 1)

Computer Shopper has named a new editor-in-chief, Janice Chen, formerly the title's editor. (November 1)

Inside: the Business of Entertainment, Media & Technology chose a new managing editor, Richard Balestrino, formerly Business Week's production manager. (November 1)

Philadelphia has an acting editor, Bill Gilford, the title's executive editor. Mr. Gilford is temporarily filling that position, following editor Stephen Fried's exit. (November 1)

eBay Magazine has just printed its last issue, December 2000. The one-year-old auction title had a circulation of 400,000, but owners eBay and Krause Publications offered no details as to why they were folding the magazine. (November 1)

Association Meetings, Corporate Meetings & Incentives, Insurance Conference Planner, Medical Meetings, Religious Conference Manager and Technology Meetings, all titles published by Adams Business Media Meetings Group, are now owned by Intertec Publishing, a division of Primedia, Inc. (November 1)

FTD In Bloom is a new title premiering in January 2001. The title, published by Butterick Company, will offer articles about home decorating, the use of floral arrangements and other related subjects. (November 1)
