The Net Economy is folding

May 30, 2002 - Just weeks after Ziff Davis Media stopped publishing its Smart Business magazine, the company announced that the telecom trade magazine The Net Economy will cease publishing.

The company said that the assets of the magazine - its subscriber list - will be merged with competitive trade magazine America's Network from Advanstar Communication Inc.

Gene Simmons unfurls his Tongue

May 29, 2002 - Gene Simmons, the bassist for Kiss with the famously long tongue, plans to launch a magazine that is being called an unabashed vanity project. Appropriately enough, it's titled Gene Simmons' Tongue. Full Story.

Show People set to hit the stage

May 28, 2002 - Clear Channel Entertainment is planning to debut Show People in September. The quarterly magazine will cover theater community including crews, casts and audiences. Newsday freelance writer Patrick Pacheco will be editor. Freelancers with thespian knowledge should look out for the magazine's debut.

EMedia to expand coverage of digital workstations

May 22, 2002 - EMedia magazine announced plans to relaunch in August. The title will redub itself EMedia, The Digital Studio Magazine. Editorial changes will include expanded coverage of advanced technology in digital media studios including non-linear editing, high-resolution display hardware and CD/DVD authoring. Queries should reflect the magazine's shift in focus.

New teen magazine to debut, more could follow

May 21, 2002 - Canada's Key Media plan to launch Fashion 18, a 150,000-circulation title aimed at 12 to 17-year-old girls. There are also rumors rival Transcontinental Media, which publishes Elle Canada and Elle Quebec with New York's Hachette-Filipacchi magazines, will unveil Elle Girl and Elle Filles. Writers should keep an eye out for these titles as new outlets for work.

Rock & Ice and Trail Runner purchased by Big Stone Inc.

May 24, 2002 - Big Stone Publishing Ltd. announced the purchase of the climbing and running magazines Rock & Ice and Trail Runner. Rock & Ice is seeking fresh new editorial voices under its new ownership.

Weakening sales for Rosie is heads-up to writers

May 22, 2002 - Newsstand sales of Rosie O'Donnell's eponymous magazine plummeted to the 200,000 to 235,000 range in May. That's down from 300,000 to 400,000 in the previous two months. Some speculate that the lower sales may be a result of her acknowledgement that she is gay.

Such a drop in sales usually triggers cost-cutting within a publishing house and writers wanting to query Rosie should be aware that writers' fees could be impacted. (May 22)

Smart Business ceases publication

May 15, 2002 - Following the June issue, Ziff Davis Smart Business will cease print publication. The business and technology title, formerly known as PC Computing, has experienced declining ad revenues despite its circulation of 800,000. The magazine's website will remain up-to-date and the title plans to relaunch as a slim newsletter in September.

CLO to launch in late August

May 13, 2002 - CLO, Chief Learning Officer magazine, written for top corporate executives who develop, implement or fund enterprise-level workforce development programs, is set to launch August 28. Articles cover employee training and education programs as well as insights, case studies and profiles. Editor-in-chief Norman B. May 8, 2002 - The May issue of National Real Estate Investor will feature expanded in-depth articles, news and trends to better follow the marketplace flow of dollars. Coverage will be subdivided into three sections: developments, feature stories and strategies. The magazine is led by editor Matt Valley and published by Primedia.

The Oxford American seeks funding to stay afloat

May 8, 2002 - The Oxford American, a literary title, may cease publication within the week if new funding is not found by May 15. The majority owner is novelist John Grisham.

New quarterly title to cover lymphedema

May 6, 2002 - Lymphatic Research and Biology, a new quarterly title covering the latest developments in lymphatic biology and pathology, will debut this fall. The magazine is the official publication of the Lymphatic Research Foundation and is led by editor-in-chief Stanley G. Rockson, M.D.

Anti-trust issues for freelance writers might end

May 6, 2002 - Rep. John Conyers, Jr. (D-Michigan) and Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah) have co-sponsored a bill to elevate the bargaining power of freelancer writers by removing the threat of the anti-trust law. This means that writers could continue to negotiate fees and contract stipulations from publishers on their own or collectively bargain if they so desired.

May 1, 2002 - Seed, the newly launched science-meets-pop culture title, is aiming to have 250,000 readers by 2004 in the 25- to 45-year-old age group who are affluent. The publishing schedule currently calls for four issues this year, eight in 2003 and 10 in 2004. President and editor Adam Bly leads the magazine. "The Tip Sheet" new editorial section in Newsweek

May 1, 2002 - A new section in Newsweek will appear starting with the May 13 issue titled "The Tip Sheet," which replaces "Focus." General interest consumer topics will be covered in one long feature and a number of smaller tidbits. The transition is being handled by assistant managing editor Kathleen Deveny.

Grand View Media Group is the new name for the Birmingham, Ala.-based publishing firm Vulcan Outdoors. (May 1)

Working Mother has announced a new executive editor, Gail Belsky. In addition, a new managing editor was named, Christine L. Ford and two new senior editors, Jennifer Gill and Victoria Scanlan Stefanakos. Also, a new senior associate editor was announced, Amy DiTullo and a new associate editor, Caroline L. Howard. (May 1)
