Writers to keep eye out on Vulcan Publications' titles

June 27, 2001 - Vulcan Publications is under serious investigation for unpaid payroll taxes which could eventually lead to seizure of the company's assets by the federal government. Heavy Equipment News and Plant Safety and Management are two of the publishers more than 30 titles. Several former and current employees have indicated that payroll checks have bounced several times in the past six months. Freelance writers beware.

CosmoGIRL! to launch three new international editions

June 27, 2001 - CosmoGIRL! will soon be available this fall in the United Kingdom, Indonesia and Hong Kong according to publisher Hearst Magazines International. The title can already be found in the Czech Republic and Turkey.

Marriott Insights to glean content from leading publications

June 27, 2001 - Marriott Insights is a new monthly guest room magazine from Marriott International, Inc. Editorial content from Time, Sports Illustrated, People, Fortune, Golf Digest, PC Magazine, Shape and Motor Trend will be used. The title's initial distribution is estimated at one million, with a total estimated readership of four million.

June 20, 2001 - The new editor at U.S. News & World Report, Brian Duffy, will be assigning more enterprise and investigative reporting articles, but it is not all about bad guys and crooked politicians. Other topics include, "educational systems that fail, health systems that don't work , business investments where investors are cheated," said Mr. Duffy. The editorial shift continues towards less coverage of U.S. government minutiae and foreign affairs.

New women's title to cover broad spectrum

June 11, 2001 - A new women's title, Women's Health & Fitness, is due to launch in the U.S. in January 2002 by UK-based publisher Highbury House Communications, Inc. The bimonthly magazine will feature information on health, fitness, nutrition, diet, recipes, wellness, relationships, children, careers and financial matters. Smithsonian to update content under new editor

June 11, 2001 - Smithsonian has announced the appointment of a new editor, Carey Winfrey, formerly the assistant managing editor at People Weekly. Mr. Winfrey anticipates changing editorial content gradually to a more contemporary voice, phasing in a few new departments and columns. Features will place more emphasis on American issues than ever before.

Business 2.0 to merge and relaunch

June 11, 2001 - Business 2.0 has been purchased by Time Inc.'s Fortune Group and will be folded into its eCompany Now title. The title will cease publication after the July 12 issue, with eCompany Now skipping the August issue, and the merged title will relaunch under the Business 2. 0 name starting with the September issue (available on newsstands as of August 13). Content will be under the guidance of editor Ned Desmond, formerly editor at eCompany Now.

Self names new editor-in-chief

June 11, 2001 - Self, a Condé Nast Publications, Inc. title, has appointed a new editor-in-chief, Lucy Danziger. Ms. Danziger replaces Cindi Leive, who accepted the position of editor-in-chief at Glamour.

June 4, 2001 - U.S. News & World Report has named a new editor, Brian Duffy, formerly the title's executive editor. Mr. Duffy replaced Stephen G. Smith, who has been named editorial director.

New trade title in health industry launches

June 4, 2001 - Writers knowledgeable in alternative medicines, including acupuncture, herbal, Tibetan and mind/body, who also understand the needs of a trade magazine, should take a look at Holistic Primary Care. The new bi-monthly title published by Ascending Media will cover new products and the physicians that use them, including the associated data or studies that support the material. Other editorial coverage consists of medical environmentalism, continuing education meetings and interviews with experts in the field.

People.com has named a new editor, Matt Diebel, formerly deputy editor at Time.com. (June 27)

NME, a UK-based music magazine, will be redesigning its format to coincide with its 50th anniversary. Plans are being kept under tight wraps according to editor Ben Knowles, but check the title's website for direction. (June 27)

Fast Company has cut seven people in editorial positions this week. Specific names and titles were not immediately available. (June 27)

Southern Boating and Marine Business Journal have appointed a new executive editor, Tim Banse. Both titles are published by Southern Boating Publications. (June 27)

Glamour has named a new beauty director, Felicia Milewicz, formerly beauty director at Mademoiselle. (June 27)

Cotton Grower Magazine has named a new senior editor, Frank Giles and a new managing editor, Laurie Bennett. The title is published by Meister Publishing. (June 25)

The New York Times has lost its managing editor, Bill Keller, who is moving to the New York Times Magazine as an op-ed columnist and senior writer. (June 20)

The Village Voice has named a new city/state editor, Thulani Davis. (June 20)

BasicPro, Visual Basic Programmer's Journal will relaunch as Visual Studio Magazine in September to reflect the changes in Microsoft's Visual Basic software. (June 20)

Robb Report and Showcase have been acquired by William J. Curtis from Luxury Media. The Robb Report's offices will eventually move to Cambridge, MA from Acton, MA, while CurtCo will headquarter in Malibu, CA and open an office in New York. (June 20)

Lighthouse Market Review, which debuts in July, is a new bimonthly covering small-cap market information and its relationship to the worldwide economy. The bimonthly Bordwell Publishing, Inc. title targets investors and brokers. (June 18)

Casa & Estilo is a new bimonthly Spanish-language title for affluent homeowners. Feature articles will cover art, entertainment and travel. The Linda International Publishing, Inc. title debuts October 2. (June 18)

Organic Style has named a new editor, Sarah Gray Miller, formerly the features editor of Garden Design. Ms. Miller replaces Carol Brietzky Brooks, who was let go before the first issue debuted. (June 18)

The Washington Blade and The New York Blade News, both gay publications, were recently acquired by Window Media. Kristina Campbell is editor at The Washington Blade, located in Washington DC at 202-797-7000. Inga Sarda is editor at The New York Blade News, located in New York at 212-268-2711. TheStreet.com has named a new editor-in-chief, David Morrow, formerly the articles editor at SmartMoney Magazine. Mr. Morrow succeeds Dave Kansas. (June 13)

Smart Partner has increased its circulation to 120,100, a 20 percent increase. The title is published by Ziff Davis Media, Inc. (June 13)

Sunset Magazine has appointed a new editor-in-chief, Katie Tamony, formerly Sunset Publishing's vice president. (June 13)

Seafaring is new quarterly title for sailors seeking information on equipment, data and electronic innovations. The quarterly title from FTW Publishing is due to launch November 13. (June 11)

Xtreme Body Mod is a new title about body piercing, tattoos and other body modifications. The bimonthly magazine will launch September 4 by Body Mod Productions. (June 11)

The New York Post fired four senior-level editors, including managing editors Stuart Marques and Marc Kalech, city editor Jerry Schmetterer, and assistant metro editor Lisa Baird. No replacements were immediately named. (June 11)

The Daily News has lost its Sunday editor, Frank Lalli, who resigned. (June 11)

Bare, a UK-based John Brown Publishing women's title, has folded less than one year after its launch. Other UK titles that have recently ceased publication include Later (IPC) , Sky (Emap), PS, Nova, Mondo, Escape Routes, Melody Maker and Select. (June 11)

Hotdog, a UK-based film title published by I Feel Good (IFG), has appointed a new editor, Paul Henderson, replacing Ben Olins who is now executive editor of IFG. IFG recently purchased Viz, Fortean Times and Bizarre from John Brown Publishing. (June 11)

Design/Build Magazine, a McKellar Publication, has been acquired by Cygnus Business Media's Building and Home Products portfolio. The monthly title has a circulation of 60,000. (June 11)

Quick & Easy Crafts and Teddy Bears & More have both ceased publication. The titles were published by H&S Media. (June 11)

Saveur has named a new executive editor, Liza Schoenfein. In addition, a new food editor was appointed, Melissa Hamilton. (June 11)

Organic Style has fired its editor-in-chief, Carol Brietzke, even before the title has debuted. A replacement was not immediately named. (June 11)

Great Chefs is a new monthly title set to debut on July 17. Published by H&S Media, the focus will be on feature stories related to famous culinary experts. (June 6)

New York magazine has lost its Gotham section co-editor, Carl Swanson and contributing editor Nina Burleigh. In the last ten days, the title also lost deputy editor Maer Roshan and senior editor Andrew Lee. (June 6)

American Prospect has a new executive editor, Harold Meyerson, formerly L.A. Weekly's executive editor. (June 6)

The Sciences, a small title published by the New York Academy of Science, has ceased publication after 40 years. (June 6)

Access, a free weekly Sunday newspaper insert, has ceased publication after three years. (June 6)

Country is the new, shortened title of M. Shanken Communications, Inc.'s Hamptons Country. A new tagline, "The Magazine of the Hamptons," was added. (June 6)

Revolution will cease publishing its U.S. edition, following release of the June/July issue. The U.K. and Asian editions will continue to be published by the U.K.-based Haymarket Group as usual. (June 4)

Loaded, a UK-based lad magazine, has appointed Maxine Creedy to the newly created position of show business editor. (June 4)

Windows 2000 Magazine, iTgraphics Magazine, Computer Reseller News and Information Week, all assets of DWR Media, an Australian IT media company, have been acquired by Penton Media. The publisher formed a new company, Penton Media Australia. (June 4)

Response Magazine has been named the official trade publication of the Electronic Retailing Association (ERA). (June 4)

The Wall Street Journal Online has appointed a new managing editor, Bill Grueskin, who succeeds Rich Jaroslovsky. (June 4)
