Vogue spins off Teen Vogue as a test

July 17, 2000 - The fashion magazine is testing Teen Vogue this fall. The first issue will be out in October and future frequency will be dependent on the success of the October trial.

This issue will be polybagged with Vogue and mailed to subscribers and households with teenage girls. It will also be available on newsstands and the total distribution will be 1.2 million copies.

O, The Oprah Magazine gets new editor-in-chief

July 12, 2000 - Amy Gross has joined O, The Oprah Magazine, as the new editor-in-chief, following the resignation of Ellen Kunes.

Ms. Gross has impressive credentials, including 10 years at several editor positions with Vogue, editorial director at Elle (1993-1996), and editor-in-chief for Mirabella (1995-1997). She has also contributed to Good Housekeeping, Mademoiselle and Talk.

Boston Globe can continue to rip off freelancers - other publishers may follow

July 2, 2000 - According to a Massachusetts judge, The Boston Globe newspaper can require prospective freelance writers to give up all rights - even for work done in the past.

If The Globe wins in the upcoming class action suit, other newspapers, magazines and content providers could legally adopt the same, restrictive contracts. Full story

Men's Health appointed a new editor-in-chief, David Zinczenko, formerly editorial director of Men's Health International. (July 31)

Trend Letter, American Speaker and Organized Executive are several of the business publication titles purchased by Wicks Business Information from Georgetown Publishing House. They will be published under the Briefings Publishing Group division. (July 31)

Asiaweek, a weekly Time Inc. magazine out of Hong Kong, has appointed a new editor, Dorinda Elliott, formerly the editor in Asia for Newsweek. (July 26)

Contractors Guide and Roofing Contractor will merge in the July issue, following the purchase of G&M Communications by Business News Publishing. Architectural Specifier will remain a stand-alone title under the new ownership. (July 26)

Internet Retailer, formerly a Faulkner & Gray title, has been purchased by a newly formed publisher, Vertical Web Media. Content will focus on the Internet's impact on vertical markets, providing how-to, technology and strategic information. (July 26)

Coal Daily, Coal Transportation Report, Air Daily, Clean Air Compliance Review, Rail Business and Intermodal Business, newsletters originally owned by Fieldston Publications Inc., are now published by Energy Argus, a division of Petroleum Argus. (July 24)

Music.com, a new print title covering the marriage of music and technology cultures, will launch in November. The web site has been running since October 1998. (July 24)

YM has a new editor-in-chief, Annemarie Iverson, who replaces Diane Salvatore. (July 19)

Fitness appointed a new editor-in-chief, Emily Listfield, formerly an executive editor with McCall's. She is replacing Sarah Mahoney. (July 19)

Parents editor-in-chief Sally Lee has been chosen as editorial director for the entire Parents family of products and publications. (July 19)

Time Asia has named a new editor, Adi Ignatius. (July 19)

Prima, Best, Your Home, Prima Baby and Focus, all British titles, have been sold to National Magazine Company, owned by Hearst Group. The magazines were formerly published by Gruner + Jahr, a Bertelsmann publishing company. (July 19)

Miller Freeman USA will be sold to Dutch publisher VNU by owner United News & Media. These include publications within the Sports & Apparel, Jewelry, Gift & Merchandise, Real Estate & Construction and Travel units. VNU publishes over 70 titles, including The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard and AdWeek. (July 19)

Bon Appétit has a new editor-in-chief, Barbara Fairchild, a 22-year veteran of the magazine. Ms. Fairchild, formerly the title's executive editor, was chosen after the death of William J. Garry. (July 12)

Internet World, a Penton Media title, has named a new editor-in-chief, Tony Rizzo. (July 12)

Reader's Digest has a new development editor, Jacob Young. Mr. Young will oversee the creation of new editorial features. (July 12)

I.D. Magazine has appointed a new editor-in-chief, Christopher Mount, as of July 10. The title, published eight times per year, is targeted at 30,000 corporate and independent designers. (July 12)

TransWorld Motocross, already a Times Mirror Interzine (www.transworldmx.com), will launch a bimonthly print publication some time in fall. With Times Mirror Magazines currently up for sale, the title may have a new owner soon. (July 12)

Lycos Internet Magazine, a new title for readers in Japan, is the result of a collaboration between Lycos Japan and Kadodawa Shoten Publishing Company. The August premier issue may trigger similar publications for other world-wide markets. (July 12)

Scroll Saw, a new title from Fox Chapel Publications, will help woodworking aficionados improve their craft skills starting in October. (July 12)

T&L Golf has named a new editor-in-chief, John Atwood, formerly with Outdoorfever.com. (July 10)

Windows 2000 Magazine, SQL Server, Business Finance, AS/400, Selling AS/400 Solutions and DominoPro are up for sale by owner Duke Communications International. Potential buyers include Ziff Davis Media and 101 Communications. (July 10)

Shift, the Canadian digital culture title, may soon be purchased from owner Normal Net Canada in a management by-out. (July 10)

Automobile Quarterly has a new owner, Automobile Heritage and Publishing Communications Inc. The title was formerly published by Kutztown Publishing. (July 10)

Smart Business for the New Economy has a new editor-in-chief, Geoffrey Precourt, previously a deputy managing editor with Time Inc.'s Custom Publishing Division. Former editor-in-chief Paul Somerson has been promoted to VP/editorial director of Ziff Davis Development Group. (July 10)

Travel + Leisure Family has a new editor-in-chief, Margot Guralnick, formerly the American Express Publishing title's senior features editor. (July 10)

Utne Reader has appointed a new editor, Jay Walljasper. The appointment comes after the resignation of Cathy Madison five weeks ago. Mr. Walljasper has previously been the executive editor and an editor-at-large for the title. (July 10)

George has appointed a new senior editor, Debra Birnbaum, formerly a deputy editor at Redbook. (July 10)

Boating Life has a new editor, Randy Vance, formerly a freelance writer. (July 10)

Time Inc. has a new editor-at-large, Gregory Curtis, former editor of Texas Monthly. (July 10)

House Beautiful has named a new editor-in-chief, Marian McEvoy, following the retirement of Louis Oliver Groop. Ms. McEvoy was editor of Elle Décor. (July 10)

PC Gaming and Video Gaming, both titles from Computec Media U.S.A., a division of German publisher Computec Media A.G., have ceased publication after 10 months. Reduced ad revenue from U.S. software manufacturers was cited as a reason. (July 10)
