Magazine for the low-carb business to launch

Feb 25, 2004 - A four-color, business-to-business magazine, LowCarbiz Magazine, will debut in April.

It will reach more than 8,000 retail buyers, executives and business owners with a financial stake in the low-carb industry.

Each issue will feature in-depth articles, profiles, news updates and "how-to" columns. Frequent topics include: shifting consumer tastes and habits; medical and scientific updates; industry trends; regulatory issues; innovation; best practices and, even, a regular low-carb/controlled-carb cartoon strip.

In 2004, the magazine will be published three times and in 2005 will go quarterly.

The publisher is TJFR Group Inc, which also publishes a newsletter for the trade. The website is at http://www.lowcarbiz.com.

Ad-less woodworking magazine to test

Feb 25, 2004 - Woodworking from F&W Publications hit the newsstands in early February with the first of two test issues for 2004.

Unlike its other woodworking title, Popular Woodworking, the new magazine will not accept advertising.

Editor is Steve Shanesy who said the goal of the publication is to fill the knowledge gaps of the nation's woodworkers, many of whom learn by trial and error. "We're not just going to give them a recipe," he said. "We're going to teach them how to cook." The first printing was 110,000 copies.

New Christian quarterly to launch this summer

Feb 25, 2004 - Family Reformation magazine will launch this June and offer "solid biblical answers for the issues facing today's Christian family."

The publisher, Family Reformation LLC which also publishes Homeschooling Today, promises "not just another light and fluffy snack with tidbits and bandages from trendy pop culture," but a magazine that "will challenge readers to discover the reality and power found in God's prescription for all aspects of family interaction."

Stacy McDonald will be the editor-in-chief and the magazine's website is at http://www.familyreformation.com.

Top real estate professionals get their own magazine

Feb 21, 2004 - A new national magazine for top-tier real estate professionals named lore debuts this month.

With the tagline "The Lives of Real Estate," the publication aims to be the "People magazine of the real estate industry" and will feature in-depth articles celebrating America's highest-performing real estate professionals and their personal stories.

lore will focus not how many homes they sold or how much they earned, but who the people are, what drives them so hard to succeed, what their passions are, where they like to travel, how they stay healthy, their personal time, and more.

The publisher is REAL Trends Inc of Littleton, CO, which will distribute the magazine to 40,000 sales professionals and management in the US realty, mortgage and title industries whose annual incomes exceed $75,000.

Editor is Steve Murray and the website - in development - will be loremagazine.com.

New military history magazine to move out

Feb 20 - Armchair General hit the newsstands on Feb 3 with articles about video games and paintball, and the chance to assume the role of commander in three simulations: a Sherman tank on Omaha Beach, a Panzer tank in Africa and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg.

Eric Weider, the nephew of fitness magazine publisher Joe Weider, is the publisher and wants to make the publication the People magazine of history. "I guarantee you George Patton is a much more interesting person than Brad Pitt in terms of a fantastic story about what one person went through." He printed 105,000 of the first issue.

Modern Uniforms to launch

Feb 19, 2004 - Modern Uniforms, a new magazine dedicated to serving the industry for sales of uniform apparel, will make its debut at a trade show in mid-February.

Jeff Rundles and Brian Anderson are the editor and senior managing editor, positions they also hold with Wearable Business, another Primedia trade magazine.

According to the magazine's research, one in four Americans now wears a uniform to work.

Modern Uniforms will publish every other month and have a controlled circulation of 17,000 copies, to be distributed to members of the uniform dealers industry.

West Coast fishing magazine to test the waters

Feb 19, 2004 - A new magazine about fishing on the West Coast from Alaska to California will be trying out the newsstands in 2004.

The editor and publisher of Salmon & Steelhead Journal is Pat Hoglund.

Two issues are planned for 2004 and the first will be available throughout the area in mid-March. It is a blend of how- and where-to information, product reviews (the first are brands of inflatable life preservers) and features about various rivers and saltwater fishing areas from Prince William Sound to California's Smith River. There also is an issue-oriented feature about a successful hatchery/wild steelhead program on Hood River.

Another issue is planned for June, then four will be published in 2005 and every subsequent year.

The magazine will sell for $5.99 on the shelf or $19.95 for an annual subscription.

New Zealand Geographic goes under

Feb 18, 2004 - Auckland, New Zealand-based magazine publisher New Zealand Geographic has gone into liquidation owing $828,500.

Shareholders have been funding the company's trading for a considerable time. But insufficient subscribers and high cost became too much. Creditors have until March 9 to submit a claim.

Affiliate marketing to get its own trade publication

Feb 9, 2004 - Revenue Magazine is the first magazine which is dedicated to the fast-growing world of affiliate marketing.

The publication explores the basics of affiliate marketing, and looks at strategies for making affiliate efforts more profitable.

FireSafe People to come this spring

Feb 9, 2004 - FireSafe People magazine is "a must-read publication for people living in urban interface zones." Published twice yearly in a 10"x12" glossy format, it will reach Southern California homeowners with feature articles on how to live well while living in a fire zone.

The first issue will be distributed in Spring 2004 to coincide with the mailing of brush clearance notices to homeowners.

It is an advertising-supported requested circulation magazine that will also be distributed to City, County and State Fire Departments, Fire Safe Councils, fire prevention agencies and insurance companies involved in fire safety and emergency response.

The magazine is currently soliciting advertising, articles, editorials, press releases and introduction to fire experts and listings of helpful websites for homeowners. Topics range widely from heroes of the California wildfires to planting a fire-safe garden. According to their press release, e-mail info@peoplemediagroup.com to submit ideas.

Affluent motorbikers targeted in new mag

Feb 9, 2004 - Magazine publisher CurtCO Media (Robb Report) has launched RobbReport MotorCycling, which is targeted to the growing audience of established, affluent riders who are passionate about motorcycling

The editor is Christopher Nugent, who has spent more than 30 years in the motorcycle industry. The managing editor is Jeff Buchanan.

The quarterly went on newsstands February 10, with an initial distribution of 100,000 copies.

The magazine's website, http://www.motorcyclingmag.com is not operating yet.

Night Sky to come into view this spring

Feb 4, 2004 - A new magazine for beginning stargazers will debut in the spring of 2004.

Night Sky will be mailed to charter subscribers on March 26th and hit the newsstands nationwide on April 13th. It is designed especially for entry- level stargazers -- those who possess very little astronomy knowledge but still want to enjoy and explore the heavens.

Kelly Beatty is the editor and is himself an expert with 30 years' experience writing about astronomy. According to the publisher's president, Susan Lit, "Night Sky magazine reaches out to a different audience than [our other magazine] Sky & Telescope -- it will have broader appeal by virtue of the fact that its content will be accessible to anyone just getting started in the hobby."
