Fast Company co-founders leave

February 26, 2003 – The two co-founders of the high-tech industry magazine Fast Company announced their resignations.

Bill Taylor and Alan Webber reportedly told their staff the decision to leave was their own. The two will stay on as consultants and help find a new editor-in-chief for the magazine.

Taylor and Webber said the magazine needs new energy and blood to advance.

Writers should watch the magazine for any change in focus as a new editor is hired.

New, down-to-earth fashion magazine in the works

February 24, 2002 – Hearst is said to be planning a women’s fashion magazine with former Mademoiselle Editor Mandi Norwood at the helm.

According to a report in Media Life, an online media industry publication, the magazine is aiming for a spring 2004 test issue. Rather than offering coverage of upscale, runway model apparel, the magazine will reportedly follow the more pedestrian style of Lucky and InStyle and present more affordable and practical fashions.

While the magazine may not see print for some time, fashion savvy writers should look for the magazine’s debut.

Navigator has ceased publication

February 23, 2003 – The in-room magazine of Holiday Inn Express hotels has ceased publication.

Editor Brian Cook told Wooden Horse that the title was folded by request of management at Holiday Inn Express last fall. It was custom published by Pace Communications Inc and the last issue was October/November/December 2002. The cover tagline was: “Leave the towel. Take the magazine.”

Another tech magazine goes down

February 19, 2003 – In case you needed proof, it’s still tough out there for magazines dependent on tech-based ad revenue. Canada’s Shift magazine announced it will suspend publication next month because of a lack of advertising from the technology sector.

The magazine had undergone several identity changes before settling on its high tech focus.

The magazine’s parent company said it will reevaluate the long-term future of the magazine when the market is more favorable.

Flotilla of new magazines to brave uncertain waters

February 3, 2003 – Times are still tough for magazines but newcomers keep coming in hopes of positioning themselves for when the economy does improve.

Media Life, an online media industry journal, reports some of the latest plans in the works include Flash, Wink and Cottage.

Publisher Gruner + Jahr is testing the waters with women’s lifestyle titles Flash and Wink. Flash will target women in their mid-20s while Wink will aim for the 30 to 45 set.

Time Inc. is said to have a number of magazines in the works including Cottage, a shelter magazine about second homes.

All these magazines may not make it to the newsstand but writers should watch for those that do.

Electronic Media plans relaunch, new name

February 3, 2003 –Twenty-year-old Electronic Media plans to expand its focus and rename itself TelevisionWeek in March.

Electronic Media has served the TV syndication, broadcast, station, cable, advertising, technology, and financial industries. Under its new name, TelevisionWeek will expand to cover changes in the global television industry with an increased focus on production, marketing, talent, and new media.

Interested writers should familiarize themselves with the magazine’s new direction.

New York Magazine has hired Simon Dumenco as editor-at-large and Jon Gluck as deputy editor. (February 26)

In Style has made several editorial changes. Lisa Simpson, senior associate editor, international, has left. Cindy Del Rosario, formerly editorial assistant, is now assistant editor. (February 26)

GQ Editor Art Cooper has retired after 20 years on the job. (February 26)

Allure Articles Editor Sadie Van Gelder is now contributing editor. (February 26)

Shape Editorial Director Anne M. Russell is now editor-in-chief. (February 24)

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Associate Editor Ed Henry has retired. Mark Solheim, senior editor, is now responsible for automobile coverage. (February 24)

Stuff Executive Editor Bret Watson has left. (February 24)

Outside Associate Managing Editor Christian Nardi has left. No replacement will be named. (February 24)

Fitness Assistant Features Editor Camille Noe has left. (February 24)

Entertainment Weekly continues to make editorial changes. Mark Harris has been promoted from assistant managing editor to editor-at-large. Jay Woodrufff goes from senior editor to assistant managing editor. as hired Sarah Witt as editor-in-chief. The magazine was launched in October 2002 by Line 56 Media and focuses on corporate executives responsible for adopting, implementing and maintaining portal business solutions. (February 24)

GreatLife Editor-in-Chief Vera Tweed has left. Andrea Sercu, formerly senior editor, replaces her. (February 19)

Electronic Gaming Monthly has hired Joe Fielder as previews editor to replace Greg Sewart. (February 19)

O, The Oprah Magazine has hired Beth Janes as associated beauty editor. She replaces outgoing Tai Beauchamp. (February 19)

Entertainment Weekly has named Jason Adams and Ari Karpel as senior editors. (February 19)

Dime Magazine has promoted Matt Satten from senior writer to associate editor. (February 19)

CRN has promoted Russell Redman from managing editor, features, to managing editor. (February 17)

Essence has promoted Vanessa Bush from fashion and beauty features editor to senior editor. (February 17)

Dwell has tapped Ann Wilson as managing editor. (February 17)

Health has named Adam Martin as senior editor. (February 17)

Entertainment Weekly has promoted John McAlley from general editor to assistant managing editor and Jay Woodruff has been promoted from senior editor to assistant managing editor. (February 17)

Gamespot has hired Bob Colayco as associate editor. (February 17)
