Barenaked Ladies singer to help grow Vines

August 28, 2002 – Canada’s Steven Page, singer of the Barenaked Ladies rock band, is planning to help expand wine mag Vines.

Page, a wine lover, has joined Shift magazine cofounders Evan Solomon andAndrew Heintzman to expand the magazine. The Ontario-based magazine plans to relaunch this fall. Writers who know Canada’s wine scene should keep an eye out for the magazine’s re-launch.

Canadian dog mag debuts

August 27, 2002 – Modern Dog, a new quarterly magazine for urban dog owners, hopes to fetch readers in British Colombia’s lower peninsula.

The glossy magazine will be distributed in B.C. area coffee shops, vet offices and pet stores. The magazine aims to appeal to city dwellers who want to travel and live well with their pets. The new title could offer new writing opportunities for freelancers with canine knowledge.

New York Times Magazine adds new departments

August 20, 2002 – The New York Times Magazine will unveil four new departments in September and next year.

"Diagnosis" will explore medical puzzles with a physician who takes readers through the process of diagnosing and treating a specific ailment.

"Page Turner" introduces readers to today's young, artistic talent from the world of movies, television, books, art, music and theater.

"Crash Course" is an adult education primer, offering the best available thinking from leading academics on current topics.

Starting next year, "Domains" will offer an inside look at how people in entertainment, sports, politics and business live their lives.

These new departments offer potential markets for freelance writers.

Working Mother to unveil new look

August 14, 2002 – Working Mother gets a redesign this month. Its new tagline is “The Smart Guide for a Whole Life.”

New Editor-in-Chief Jill Kirchenbaum is out to capture what she describes as the “I’ll do this my way spirit” of today’s working mothers. Two new sections debut this month. “Work in Progress" will feature a working mother and “Quick Dish” is a revamped food section for busy mothers.

Writers should note these changes before querying.

Ziff Davis avoids bankruptcy, prepares to restructure

August 12, 2002 – Technology magazine publisher Ziff Davis Media Inc. said it has completed a sweeping financial restructuring plan and will avoid bankruptcy. Click here for more.

Men’s Journal alters course

August 12, 2002 – Seeking to break away from its emphasis on outdoor adventure writing, Men’s Journal will take on more tame subjects such relationships and fashion as its tries to compete with men’s consumer titles such as GQ and Esquire.

As part of the plan, Editor-in-Chief Sid Evans will step down. He is being replaced by Robert Wallace, former Editorial Director of Talk magazine and Rolling Stone editor in the 1970s and 1990s.

Writers should note these changes before querying the magazine.

Seeing red, Red Herring lays off 28 percent of staff

August 7, 2002 – Red Herring, once the darling of high-tech magazines, has layed off 28 percent of its staff following a continuing slump in ad revenues.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the magazine’s staff will drop from 70 people to fewer than 50. That’s down from a high of 350 employees just two years ago.

Hard times at the magazine probably mean rough going for freelancers trying to break into the publication.

Alpinist Magazine climbs into the market

August 7, 2002 – Alpinist Magazine, a quarterly publication about mountain climbing, is set to debut in November.

The magazine will feature first-person accounts of new routes, photography and compelling reportage on climbing from around the world.

If you know mountain climbing, consider pitching the magazine a story. The editor is Christian Beckwith, former editor of American Alpine Journal.

Total Digital Photography developing

August 7, 2002 – Plans are in the works to debut Total Digital Photography, a magazine aimed at new and seasoned photographers.

Writers who know the difference between pixels and Polaroids should consider querying the new magazine. The editor will be Simon Joinson, former editor of Better Digital Photography.

Wealthy suburbanites to get Cachet

August 6, 2002 – Plans are in the works to launch Cachet, a magazine aimed at well-to-do suburban readers.

The magazine will be targeted to the wealthy suburbs surrounding the 25 largest cities in the U.S. Susan Wyland, who helped launch Real Simple, will serve as editorial director.

If you know your way around leafy suburbs, SUVs and tennis clubs, consider pitching the magazine a story.
