New title to cover Internet impact on entertainment and information industries

August 23, 2000 - The parent companies of Inside.com, positioned as a media insider, and Industry Standard, an Internet and technology title, are collaborating on a new magazine to be launched later this year. The unnamed title will reportedly cover the "digital transformation of the entertainment and information industries." Full Story

For The Groom falters at financial altar

August 23, 2000 - After just two issues, with a third "all but ready to go," For The Groom publisher Wings Media is conceding financial difficulties. Ah, the woes of second round capital procurement.

The title, launched this January with a distribution of 200,000 for each issue, is confident that there is a market for the "men preparing for marriage" content. "Ultimately, we have had no indication that the product is not viable," said founder and publisher David S. Knickerbocker.

Writers who are querying or preparing material, or have works in the hopper, should keep a sharp eye out for the outcome of this altar falter.

National Geographic expands its media borders

August 23, 2000 - After 112 years as a stand-alone entity, National Geographic Society is expanding its media horizon. With a 30 percent purchase stake in Internet travel newcomer iExplore, the society's venerable title, National Geographic, will share photos and article across print and Internet platforms.

Writers should recheck their publication rights and keep this content swap in mind when querying or negotiating new assignments and contracts.

Martial Arts Magazine and Karate Illustrated get black belt-styled chop

August 23, 2000 - Two bimonthly titles, Martial Arts Magazine and Karate Illustrated, are chopping their publishing schedule to one-shot efforts. The plan is to create six special issues in 2001.

Owner Black Belt Communications, a division of Sabot Publishing located in Glen Allen, VA., feels they are not effectively capturing the Chinese, Japanese and Korean market segments. Currently, paid circulation is about 20,000 each.

Publisher Richard Price said that only Black Belt, a third title published by the group, has successfully reached the mixed audience, holding steady with a paid circulation of 80,000.

Martha Stewart Holiday tackles seasonal events - why don't you?

Red Herring spells out differentiation

August 16, 2000 - Red Herring sees itself with an important differentiation from other business titles like Upside, Business 2.0, Industry Standard and newly launched line56. "Our mission is to figure out for our readers the future of business," said CEO Chris Alden.

Reporting on ideas when they are in the testing and developments stage, the title's focus will shift to deeper analysis and news coverage of business technology. An increase in the publication schedule from monthly to biweekly will occur in order to accommodate the growing issue bulk, which eclipsed at 628 pages in June.

Subscription Marketing, a bimonthly newsletter formerly published by Blue Dolphin Group, is on a two-issue break as the New York editorial team regroups under new owner Smart Circulations Solutions. (August 30)

Bizmodel.com and Between The Lines are two new e-mail newsletters which will be launched later this month by the magazine Information Week, in response to the increasing demand of its InformationWeek Daily newsletter. Content will include industry news and analysis and original content by several of the magazine's columnists. (August 30)

Popular Science appointed a new editor-in-chief, Cecilia Wessner. This is the first female editor-in-chief for the 128-year-old publication. (August 30)

Emap is once again shedding non-core magazines. This time it will be construction, media and automotive trade titles, mostly published in Germany and Switzerland. A list of titles, from either Emap or Bertelsmann, the new owner, was not immediately available. (August 28)

Gusto, a new cooking and culture title directed at Hispanic women, is being launched by Time Inc.'s Cooking Light. The monthly will be published in English. (August 28)

Mealey Publications, publisher of legal newsletters for attorneys, has been sold to Lexis-Nexis, a division of Reed Elsevier. (August 23)

Spin has appointed a new managing editor, Regan Solmo, formerly the managing editor at Civilization. (August 16)

The Status of Luxury, a quarterly newsletter covering the luxury market, will provide news, features and research data to customers of American Express Publishing. (August 16)

Smock, launched this month by Smock Media, is a bimonthly magazine covering the interaction between art, design, entertainment and fashion. The title is guided by editor Mike Weiss. (August 16)

eSolutions is debuting this month. The monthly will educate small-to-medium-size businesses (5-500 employees) about Web-based business solutions. Ziff Davis Custom Media is publishing for Fullscope Inc. (Aug 15)

Everyday Pictures is a new quarterly published by Meredith for Kodak. The magazine is for anyone who owns a camera and will contain ideas how to take better pictures. It will cost $2.49 and be available at Kodak retailers. (Aug 15)

House of Business will go bimonthly in September. The title targets business-leaders who use their homes as headquarters and will cover technology, architecture and design. FHM will be launched in Germany in October, making it the 12th country to be so blessed. Publisher emap is aiming for 20 countries by next April. The German editor will be Uwe Killing, former editor of Max magazine in Germany.

Seventeen launched a Philippine edition on July 15 by publisher Primedia and local publisher Summit Publishing. "We are globally growing the brand," Primedia vice chairman Beverly Chell said. (Aug 14).

Streaming Media Magazine will launch at the Streaming Media West 2000 Convention in December. The magazine will "interpret" the latest trends in streaming media applications. (Aug 14)

Telecom Business was bought by Intertec in late 1999 and will relaunch in October. The new editor is Michael Burr. He said: "Our goal is to help executives make strategic decisions by revealing competitive trends that drive our industry. Plastics Technology, owned by Bill Communications since its launch in 1945, has been sold to Gardner Publications. It looks like the monthly title, with a circulation of 50,000, will stay editorially intact at its current New York location. (August 7)

Physicians Financial News (PFN) has been sold to Rogers Media, subsidiary of Rogers Communications, a Canadian company. The title, published 16 times per year, has a circulation of 128,000 and is targeted at healthcare professions who need information on personal and professional money management issues. (August 7)

Energy Customer Management, a new quarterly publication from Public Utility Reports, Inc., will help energy companies in competitive environments acquire, manage and retain customers. (August 7)

Victoria has appointed a new editor-in-chief, Margaret Kennedy, formerly the editor of House Beautiful. Ms. Kennedy is replacing retiring founder Nancy Lindemeyer. (August 2)

Madison, an upscale lifestyle title, is folding after the October issue, although a timely infusion of cash could still push it into a relaunch. Low circulation and less than adequate marketing, rather than editorial content, are blamed for the pending demise. (August 2)

Odyssey, Faces and Footsteps, school and educational market titles previously published by Cobblestone Publishing Division, are now owned by Carus Publishing Company. (August 2)

Bloomberg Magazine will be re-titled Bloomberg Markets, starting with the September issue. Content will still target Bloomberg service users with insight on securities products and current business, industry analysis and career management. (August 2)

Gear, a sex/fashion/sports/technology title for 21- to 34-year-old men, has increased its ratebase to 375,000, due to a 30 percent increase in ads the first half of 2000. Canadian publisher Hollinger Inc. has sold its 85 trade and directory magazines to CanWest Global Communications. The deal should be finalized by the end of September. (August 2)
