Budget Living launches this year

April 22, 2002 - The subtitle to the new magazine Budget Living is "Get more for your money." According to magazine entrepreneur Don Welsh, it's a combination of Martha Stewart Living, Money, House Beautiful and Consumer Reports. The magazine will begin as a bi-monthly with a rate base of 300,000 and increase publication frequency to 10 issues per year in 2004. Editor-in-chief Sarah Gray Miller will lead the title.

Rolling Stone looking for new editor

April 29, 2002 - Rolling Stone, the Wenner Media title, is actively looking for a new editor to replace managing editor Robert Love. Editorial coverage will also change - with more focus on news and shorter stories, rather than the traditional longer features.

Slate Magazine names new editor

April 29, 2002 - Slate Magazine, the online magazine published by Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft, has named a new editor, Jacob Weisberg, following the resignation of Michael Kinsley. Mr. Weisberg will oversee Slate from New York. Editorial expansion in the cultural-arts, as well as sports, food and technology coverage is being planned.

Young Money utilizes college journalists for new editorial content

April 22, 2002 - Young Money, the quarterly lifestyle and money magazine for 18- to 24-year-old college students, has revamped its look and editorial content. Changes include enhanced lifestyle content and money-related matters such as credit cards, student loans, saving and investing, car buying and career searches. New gaming title to launch

April 22, 2002 - Global Gaming Business is the name of a new twice-a-month magazine set to debut June 15, with features, columns and departments covering the worldwide casino gaming industry. April 22, 2002 - Sports Afield, the 115-year-old hinting and outdoor sports title, has officially ceased publication with its June issue, but inquiries are being reviewed for possible rescue.

Two energy titles merge to form new magazine

April 22, 2002 - Platts Energy Business and Technology is a newly launched title, the result of a merging between Global Energy Business and Energy IT. Cutting-edge technology news will be incorporated with corporate finance, industry trends, energy policy and strategic planning coverage. The title will debut in May with a circulation of 37,000 consisting of CEOs, CFOs, CIOs and other corporate decision-makers. Jon Arnold, formerly the editor-in-chief of Energy IT, will lead the magazine.

New title to launch for CSOs

April 22, 2002 - CSO is the title of a new publication, due to launch in September, for chief security officers (CSOs). Editorial director Lew McCreary and executive editor Derek Slater will lead the monthly magazine, published by IDG's subsidiary CXO Media Inc.

Moxie out of print, but remains online

April 15, 2002 - Submissions are still being accepted at Moxie's online site, but don't expect to see your material in print any more as the title has suspended print publication. The new submission guidelines are available online. The big change is that your submission is only considered when accompanied by a $10 reader's fee and the pay for acceptance is $10.

Pipeline and Gas Technology launches on schedule

April 10, 2002 - A new monthly title for the worldwide pipeline, construction and maintenance industry, Pipeline and Gas Technology, launched this month on schedule. Coverage will include issues relating to crude oil pipelines and natural gas transportation and distribution. Published by Houston-based Hart Publications, and led by Lew Bullion, editor, the title will reach 26,000 industry decision-makers.

Connected Home Magazine delays debut

April 8, 2002 - Originally scheduled to launch its premier issue in March, Connected Home Magazine has delayed the debut to May 15, largely as a result of the economy.

Hollywood Reporter revamps format

April 8, 2002 - The 72-year-old Hollywood Reporter is adding a new features division, unifying The Reporter's daily news and special issues departments into one editorial team, allowing news stories to be easily upgraded to features. Paula Parisi has been promoted to head of the new division. New columns will appear covering the business facets of film, television, music, technology and production services.

Postal rates freeze

April 8, 2002 - Instead of raising postal rates on June 30 for consumer magazine delivery, the USPS has decided to freeze rate hikes for the next 21 months.

The New Environmentalist launches

April 3, 2002 - The New Environmentalist launched with a March issue, featuring information about the environment for work and home lifestyles. Monthly topics include reduced energy consumption and pollution, current challenges and accomplishments as well as common sense strategies and technology to make the environment better and cleaner. PETITE transforms content for May premier

April 1, 2002 - PETITE magazine will feature more celebrities and top petite fashion designers in its national monthly premiere issue this May. 40 percent of the title will cover beauty, health, nutrition, fitness and travel with another 50 percent dedicated to fashion. The title is led by editor Deborah Tumlinson and includes beauty editor Diane Irons and fitness editor Tamilee Webb.

Connected Home Magazine to launch in May

April 1, 2002 - Connected Home Magazine is a new Penton Media title for IT professionals and other users looking to implement home technology for telecommuting and small offices and home offices. Additional coverage will focus on the convergence of home networking with digital entertainment and home automation. The premier issue will appear in a special issue of Windows & .NET Magazine and then as a monthly section, with two freestanding supplements in 2002. Upside struggles in face of angry contributors

April 1, 2002 - Upside, a biz-tech title, will remain in print following a buyout of Upside Media's assets but not liabilities by MCG Capital Corp., which will continue to publish the magazine under a shell corporation, UMAC. More than 40 creditors are claiming $600,000 in past due bills, and many no longer want anything to do with the magazine. Writers beware.


US Weekly has named a new deputy editor, Joseph Steuer. In addition, a new senior beauty editor was announced, Melissa Green. (April 29)

iMarketing News, a Courtenay Communications title, has been folded into their DM News magazine. DM News' circulation has increased from 40,000 to 50,000 as a result. (April 24)

Real Simple has named a new home editor, Jane Burdon. (April 24)

The PalmPilotFiles Software Insider is a new Palm Pilot software review magazine that welcomes submissions but does not pay anything for them. The editor, Kathy Burns, accepts queries at specsubmit@palmpilotfiles.com. (April 24)

Rolling Stone's day-to-day editorial operation, normally under the guidance of editor Robert Love, will be overseen by chairman and editor Jann Wenner of Wenner Media, owner of Rolling Stone. (April 22)

The approximately 70 titles that make up Vivendi Universal's health and business magazine professional press unit have been sold to Cinven, Carlyle and Apax. (April 22)

Lucky has named a new special projects editor, Allyson Mitchell, formerly a vice president with the public relations firm Harrison & Shriftman. (April 17)

Energy Decisions, a Trade Press Publishing title, has ceased publication. Two editors were reassigned to sister magazines but details were not immediately available. (April 17)

Hemmings Motor News will be acquired by Charlotte, N.C.-based American City Business Journals Inc. from the late Terry Ehrich's estate. (April 15)

Log Home Design has named a new associate editor, Peter Lindblad, formerly a sports reporter for the Stevens Point Journal in Wisconsin. (April 15)

In Style has named a new executive editor, Martha McCully, who will begin her position on April 29. (April 15)

Business 2.0 has named a new editor, Josh Quittner, who replaces Ned Desmond. (April 10)

SportingKid has changed its editorial address to 240 Prospect Place, E-l, Alpharetta, GA 30005, but their phone number (678) 297-3903 remains the same. (April 8)

Motor Trend announced a new executive editor, Matt Stone, formerly the title's senior editor. (April 8)

Blender has increased its frequency from eight issues per year to ten. The title's rate base is now 350,000. (April 8)

In Style has named a new executive editor, Maria Baugh, formerly the executive editor at Teen People. (April 1)

Us Weekly has named a new managing editor, Carolyn Noyes, formerly a managing editor at Ladies Home Journal. The title also appointed a new photo editor, Leyla Sharabi, replacing Kathy McCarver. (April 1)

The Spanish language issues of Prevention, Teen, Discover, Men's Fitness, Motor Trend and Newsweek, formerly published by Ideas Publishing Group, have been purchased by Conde Nast Publications. Already under the wings at Conde Nast are the Spanish editions of Vogue, Glamour and Architectural Digest. (April 1)
