April 25, 2001 - O, The Oprah Magazine is increasing its rate base from 1.3 million to 1.9 million beginning with the June issue. That's a 40 percent hike in circulation, which means more exposure for your work if you orchestrate a successful pitch! It is estimated that there is an average of 1 million newsstand sales monthly and 2 million subscribers.

April 25, 2001 - Financial Executive, the title for CFOs and senior financial executives, is bumping up its publishing frequency from six issues per year to ten beginning in May 2001. Detour detours from publishing schedule

April 23, 2001 - Detour, previously published ten times per year, recently combined their April and May issues into one, and will be doing the same for June and July, the traditional combo summer issue. Monthly publishing should resume after that, but the title has endured high staff turnover in the last year and has actively been raising money ($2 million) to keep the doors open. Writers should be on their toes if querying or submitting to this title, published by Los Angeles-based Detour Media Group.

Family Circle makes a few changes

April 18, 2001 - Family Circle, the Gruner+Jahr family lifestyle title, will be adding more pages for stories starting with the May 15 issue. At the same time, however, the magazine will only be published 15 times per year instead of 17, and guaranteed circulation will drop from 5 million copies to 4.6 million.

Sports Illustrated for Women to make changes

April 16, 2001 - Sports Illustrated for Women will be increasing publication frequency to eight issues per year starting this September. In addition, the title will begin including more fitness and outdoors adventure articles. The mini re-launch coincides with a change in managing editors, from Sandra Bailey to Susan Casey, effective immediately.

New section in Time magazine debuts

April 16, 2001 - Time Global Business is a new monthly section within Time magazine. Topics include:

April 11, 2001 - Wired, a new economy title, has named a new editor, Chris Anderson, formerly the U.S. business editor of the Economist. Mr. Anderson beat out several notable reported choices to replace outgoing Katrina Heron.

Is Business 2.0 sold or not?

April 11, 2001 - Although it is still unclear whether a business deal has been finalized, several sources are reporting that Time Inc. will be purchasing Imagine Media's Business 2.0. Stay tune for the final verdict.

E-Zine Magazine helps projects find funding

Title for large women struggling in print format

April 9, 2001 - Radiance: The Magazine for Large Women has posted a note on its website to let readers and writers know that it has put the printing of Radiance on hold for now as it searches for a publisher. Meanwhile, the website is expanding its coverage with new features, interviews, essays, book reviews, poetry and artwork. Writers beware however, as it also noted that in the process of shifting to an online magazine, the title does not know if payment for accepted submissions can be offered.

V-TWIN magazine tries fresh approach in relaunch

April 9, 2001 - V-Twin motorcycles, formerly the exclusive domain of Harley-Davidson, are now also found in manufacturers such as Big Dog, Indian, Victory, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha.

Editor-in-chief Dave Nichols noted the May relaunch of V-TWIN "will continue to cover Harley-Davidson motorcycles, but will broaden its scope to encompass all V-Twin cruisers in this hot new marketplace." Content will also cover the burgeoning growth in aftermarket companies and the master custom builders who are entering the market. Material from VQ magazine, the quarterly title from the same publisher, Easyriders Inc.'s Paisano Publishers, will be absorbed by V-TWIN. Distribution is expected to increase from 55,000 to 167,000.

Magazine prices to increase if proposed USPS rate hike approved

April 9, 2001 - A proposed mailing rate hike for periodicals by the USPS is once again on the table. Last year's proposal ended with a 9.9 percent increase instead of 15 percent for 2001. Now a new hike has been proposed by the USPS, possibly as high as 25 percent. The net result will probably mean an increase in magazine prices, forcing publishers to seek ways to improve revenue and cut expenses. Writers should stay current regarding this subject in order to be prepared for possible freezes or reductions in freelance rates.

Inside Content is new title name resulting from merger between Brill's Content and Inside

New title to focus on Microsoft's new video game console

April 2, 2001 - A new title, The Official Xbox Magazine, is set to debut sometime this summer, several months in advance of the anticipated release of Microsoft's new video game console, Xbox. The title will be published by Future Network's Imagine Media and will initially appear in the US, UK, Germany, France and Italy. Talk has appointed a new managing editor, Richard Balestrano, formerly the managing editor of Inside magazine. In addition, Sara Culley has been named assistant managing editor, while Perry van der Meer has left his position as deputy editorial director after just seven months. (April 30)

Fortune Small Business has named a new senior editor, David Lidsky, formerly the title's technology editor. (April 30)

Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel will increase its ratebase from 400,000 to 450,000 starting with the September/October issue. (April 23)

Real Simple has named a new senior editor, Jenny Rosenstrach, formerly the senior editor at Biography Magazine. (April 23)

Financial Planning has named a second editor-at-large, Bob Clark, formerly editor-in-chief and publisher of MorningstarAdvisor.com. (April 18)

Outside has named a new editorial director, Alex Heard, formerly the deputy editor at Wired. The title is based in Santa Fe. (April 18)

Homestyle has announced the appointment of a new deputy editor, Dan Shaw, and a new managing editor, Kelly Case Winkler. (April 18)

Cosmo Brides has announced a new editor, Catherine Westwood. The title is a publication of the National Magazine Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hearst Corporation and based in the UK. (April 18)

Grow is new children's gardening title scheduled to launch in May by publisher H&S Media. (April 16)

Hot and Pojo's Pokemon, two H&S Media Inc. titles, are scheduled to fold. Hot will publish its last issue in June; Pojo's last issue date was unavailable. (April 16)

TeenStyle will move its editorial headquarters from Los Angeles to Illinois. The address is 2121 Waukegan Rd., Ste 1200, Bannockburn, IL 60015 or call 847-444-4880. The entire staff declined to relocate, so expect a new editor to be named soon. (April 16)

Functional Foods & Nutraceuticals (FFN), a trade magazine for food executives, has been acquired by New Hope Natural Media, a division of Penton Media, Inc. The title will be re-launched as a bimonthly beginning with the May/June issue to a circulation of 11,000. (April 11)

The Industry Standard Europe will suspend publication. The U.S. edition will be distributed in the UK with material contributed from the UK bureau. A Taiwanese edition of The Industry Standard, titled New Economy, recently launched. (April 11)

Official Xbox Magazine, a new title scheduled to launch one month prior to the release of Microsoft's Xbox game console, is reported now to be set for a May 17 debut. It is noted that a delay in the console's release will also push back the launch of the title. (April 11)

Contractor magazine, a Cahners Business Information title, has been sold to Penton Media, Inc. (April 11)

TransWorld STANCE, a TransWorld Media teen-boy lifestyle title, announced a new editor-in-chief, Ted Newsome. (April 11)

HomeSeekers magazine has been sold by owner HomeSeekers.com. The press release did not name the buyer. (April 11)

Evo magazine, a UK-based title for hardcore car enthusiasts, has been acquired from Evo Publications by Dennis Publishing. The editorial team remains in Wellingborough. (April 9)

Home Office Computing, the 18-year-old title for home-office workers, will cease publication with its April issue. Small Business Computing, another of Freedom Technology Media Group's titles, will partially absorb editorial material. (April 9)

Futures Magazine has named a new assistant editor, Daniel Collins.(April 9)

PharmaGenomics will debut in August to 40,000 readers in North America and Europe who are interested in research and applications for genomic and proteomic medicine. A second issue is slated for October, but publication frequency for 2002 was not as yet decided by publisher Advanstar Communications. (April 9)

Maxim, the UK-based men's title, will publish a Portuguese edition starting March 21, a Polish edition debuting April 18, and a German version set for launch on May 23. Further expansion in the European market is expected by Dennis Publishing. (April 9)

New York Post Sports Week will immediately cease publication. The title was launched 10 months ago. (April 9)

Ocean Drive en Espanol has appointed a new editor-in-chief, Sara Maria "Fifi" Castany. The title is due to launch next month. (April 9)

Bassmaster Magazine, along with all other properties of Alabama-based B.A.S.S. Inc., have been acquired by ESPN. (April 9)

Official Xbox Magazine has named its choice for the US edition editor-in-chief, Mike Salmon. The title is due to launch sometime this summer. (April 4)

Twist, the Bauer Publishing teen title, has lost its beauty editor, Lisa Kovalovich. No replacement was announced. (April 4)

Maclean's magazine, Canada's national newsmagazine, has named a new editor, Anthony Wilson-Smith, formerly the title's national affairs columnist and editor-at-large. (April 2)

M-Business, a magazine that covers the mobile economy, announced the launch of a Spanish edition. The CMP Media Inc. monthly title will reach 10,000 Spanish CEOs, CTOs, VPs, directors, systems integrators, analysts and consultants. (April 2)

EE Times Asia will expand publication from a monthly into a bimonthly tabloid newspaper. The title serves the electronic engineering community throughout Asia and China. (April 2)
